摘要:
This month the Optical Telescope Assembly of Space Telescope is being shipped from Perkin–Elmer Corp to Lockheed Missiles and Space Co, where the remaining hardware and observing instruments will be installed and tested. Once planned for launch in 1984, Space Telescope is now scheduled to be launched by the Space Shuttle in August 1986 into an orbit 360 miles above the Earth.

Coherent sources of vacuum‐ultraviolet and extreme‐ultraviolet radiation are hard to come by. The selection of lasers emitting in the vuv (wavelengths below 2000 A˚) is very limited, and the first clear observation of laser emission in the xuv (below 1040 A˚) is only a year old (PHYSICS TODAY, November 1983, page 19).

摘要:
From the near ultraviolet to the near infrared—2000 A˚ to 25 microns—we have access to an abundance of coherent sources, some of them tunable over limited ranges. For the outer reaches of the optical spectrum—the far ultraviolet and the far infrared, where conventional laser sources offer very little—free‐electron lasers present a unique opportunity. The preceding story describes the promise of FEL harmonic frequency multiplication for the vacuum ultraviolet and extreme ultraviolet. At the other end of the spectrum, a novel, electrostatic‐accelerator‐based, broadly tunable, far‐infrared FEL at the University of California, Santa Barbara, began lasing at 400 microns two months ago.

摘要:
One of the goals of physics is to establish simple sets of laws that provide a unified picture of apparently different physical phenomena. In the realm of elementary particle physics, attempts have been made over the last decade to unify all known forces in nature by a common highest symmetry known as supersymmetry. In recent years these ideas have become quite widespread in various branches of physics, ranging from investigations of the early universe to polymer physics. This burgeoning and diversified interest was recently exemplified at the Workshop on Supersymmetry in Physics at Los Alamos, New Mexico, in December 1983, which brought together physicists from many different disciplines.

Metallurgists are now able to take any element in the periodic table and implant it in the surface region of virtually any metal. Although the resulting novel metastable alloys are usually only a fraction of a micron thick, they have potentially important commercial applications and are contributing greatly to fundamental research on metals.

摘要:
The Division of High Polymer Physics of the American Physical Society was founded in 1944, spurred in large measure by the development of synthetic rubber during the Second World War. With the enormous postwar growth of the synthetic polymer industry, the field of polymer physics burgeoned—and along with it, the Division of High Polymer Physics. At the time of the March 1984 APS meeting, the division was an active, thriving community of 1001 members with a variety of scientific interests and activities. In this article, we will attempt to give the flavor of their work. We hope our account is sufficiently specific to be useful and interesting to polymer scientists, yet general enough to be intelligible and interesting to the general reader.
