When experiments last year at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings showed that the total cross sections for proton–proton collisions were rising about 10&percent; as center‐of‐mass energies increased from 23 to 53 GeV, there was great excitement and considerable surprise. Now a tripartite team working at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory has investigated total cross sections from targets of protons and deuterons where the incident particles were protons, antiprotons, positive and negative kaons and positive and negative pions; incident energies ranged from 50 to 200 GeV in the laboratory system. By comparing the proton and deuteron cross sections, neutron cross sections were deduced.

摘要:
Harvesting the sun's bounty of energy is a nontrivial problem—the sun is a nonstationary and often a poorly concentrated source of energy. Another attempt to overcome these difficulties is resulting from a collaboration between workers at the University of Chicago and Argonne National Laboratory. The project, with recently announced funding from the Atomic Energy Commission ($140 000), has reached the stage where prototype collectors have been constructed. These collectors do not need to be redirected during the day and can collect isotropic light more effectively than many earlier designs.

Two proposals for major high‐energy physics research installations were received by the Atomic Energy Commission this Spring. A 30‐GeV center‐of‐mass energy electron–positron colliding‐beam facility is the subject of a joint Stanford University and University of California proposal submitted in April. The other proposal, submitted in May, comes from Brookhaven National Laboratory and spells out the particulars ofISABELLE, a proton–proton intersecting storage accelerator where center‐of‐mass energies of up to 400 GeV would be available.

Sadi Carnot's first and only scientific work was published just one hundred and fifty years ago. It initiated the development of the classical thermodynamics that James Clerk Maxwell characterized so well as “a science with secure foundations, clear definitions, and distinct boundaries.” The role Carnot's ideas played in developing that science is the subject of this article.

摘要:
A static trap capable of storing ions for many hours—electrons for over a month—bids fair to bring the convenience of the chemist's reagent shelf to the study of ions and their interactions. The trap to store heavy ions developed at the Joint Institute of Laboratory Astrophysics, shown on the cover and in figure 1, is preferable for our work to its older cousin, the radiofrequency trap, in that it does not feed energy into the system it contains. Its usefulness is further enhanced by a nondestructive detection technique. Thus ends the era when our knowledge of ions and their interactions depended exclusively on analysis of plasmas, laboratory and natural, or the cleaner method of colliding beams.

A year of publishing—this is how the American Institute of Physics would characterize 1973 if asked to summarize its many‐faceted activities during that year in a single phrase. This may seem surprising, when some such statement as “publishing is still the major business of the Institute” has become a cliche´ in these annual reports. But in 1973 the number of interlocking trends and changes in AIP programs connecting in some way with publishing activities was unusually high. Examples range from expected to unexpected changes and include instances involving the publishing effort both directly and indirectly.
