摘要:
From time to time, cryogenic laboratories have experienced difficulty in obtaining supplies of gaseous helium because helium has been in short supply and can be purchased only with a US Government permit. Usually, these permits to purchase have been obtainable, though sometimes this has involved some trouble. As far as the author is aware, cryogenic laboratories have ultimately obtained the helium needed.

摘要:
If you believe in atoms, and believe that atoms bind themselves together to form solids, and are willing to grant that these binding forces are not so strong but that the atoms may vibrate one against the other, then you have a mechanism that can be used to explain many of the properties of solids. In fact this mechanism is very basic to our description of the solid state. Without these atomic oscillations, or lattice vibrations, we would be hard put to explain, say, normal electrical resistance; yet without this mechanism, apparently superconductivity also would be virtually impossible. Luckily, though, many of the things of interest in solid‐state physics can be decoupled for the purpose of significant study from thedetailsof the vibrating lattice, although few explanations, indeed, are offered without acknowledging the existence of this large reservoir of lattice interactions. This basic importance of the mechanism leads to an extremely rich historical background on the subject; the number of brilliant, and modest, lights in physics illuminating the theory of these vibrations being great, and growing still.

摘要:
The Thirteenth Annual Power Sources Conference was held April 28–30, 1959, at the Shelbourne Hotel in Atlantic City. What was once a yearly review of progress made in the electrochemical field has been expanded over the past few years to cover all energy sources, power conversion systems, and power control devices which may find application in military programs. The sponsor of the conference, the Power Sources Division of the US Army Signal Research and Development Laboratory, Fort Monmouth, N.J., recognized that such an exchange of information is a practical necessity for specialists in the various fields.

摘要:
University lecturing and advanced research positions abroad are open to qualified physicists under the Fulbright program for next year. To be eligible a person must hold US citizenship. At least one year of college or university teaching experience at the faculty level is required for applicants for lecture positions. In the case of research grants the requirement is a doctoral degree at the time of application, or recognized professional standing.

摘要:
PHYSICS teaching by television or film, in terms of measuralbe contributions to learning, appears to compare favorably with conventional classroom instruction in high schools, according to a report issued recently by the American Institute of Physics. The report (A Study of the Teaching of Physics by Film and Television, by Grant O. Gale) summarizes the results of an evaluation program carried out in 1957–58 under the joint sponsorship of the AIP and the American Association of Physics Teachers and with support of the Fund for the Advancement of Education.

摘要:
Topics ranging from hydrodynamic stability, turbulence, and magnetohydrodynamics to analytical and numerical approaches in calculating compressible flow problems were presented in invited talks at a conference on hydrodynamics held October 16–18, 1958, at Los Alamos, N. M. Sponsored by the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory of the University of California, the meeting was attended by forty visiting scientists and as many LASL staff members. All sessions of the meeting were open and unclassified and were held in the auditorium of the Laboratory Administration Building.
