摘要:
Stellarators appear to be back in business. After a series of consistently disappointing results in the 1960's, Lyman Spitzer's scheme for plasma confinement in a toroidal fusion device was generally abandoned in the last decade by American magnetic‐confinement researchers, in favor of the more promising tokamak concept.

摘要:
Brookhaven celebrated the twentieth anniversary of the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron in May. John Blewett, Ernest Courant (Brookhaven) and Kjell Johnsen (CERN) reminisced about designing and building the machine. Some of the speakers recalled the great physics discoveries made at the AGS. Melvin Schwartz (Stanford) talked about finding the muon neutrino and a “residual level of junk” events that were probably neutral currents. Val Fitch described the discovery of CP violation (an experiment approved on the basis of a two‐page proposal with no detailed background calculations). Nicholas Samios (Brookhaven) reviewed the bubble‐chamber program, which over the two decades yielded 40 million pictures, including the first &OHgr; and the first charmed baryon. Samuel Ting (MIT) described the experiments leading to theJ/&psgr;,which led to a new high‐energy era with charm, beauty and other gracious qualities.

摘要:
As radioastronomers continue to push their observations to shorter wavelengths and fainter signals, their progress is impeded by a lack of sufficiently sensitive millimeter‐wave receivers capable of operating at frequencies above 100 GHz. But now a spinoff from Josephson‐junction fabrication technology appears to be coming to the rescue. New metallurgical and lithographic techniques developed for Josephson‐effect computers are permitting the construction of superconducting diode junctions that promise to function as high‐frequency photon detectors and heterodyne mixers near the theoretical limits of sensitivity.

摘要:
“The Panel is pleased to record its view that the taxpayers are receiving their money's worth… While the US magnetic‐fusion program represents only about a third of the worldwide effort, the US has become its unquestioned leader. As a result of this progress, the US is now ready to embark on the next step…exploration of the engineering feasibility of fusion power.”

摘要:
The Governing Board and staff of the American Institute of Physics applied themselves to some very basic questions during 1979: What are the functions of the Institute? How can its resources best be used in the future to attack the problems and seize the opportunities facing the US physics and astronomy community?

摘要:
In the process of evolution every possible niche for survival has been exploited by some animal species. Whenever there is a biological area that produces a surplus it becomes advantageous for some species to adapt itself to make use of that surplus; many species have thus become endowed with highly specialized skills that have given them exclusive access to some hidden treasures.

摘要:
The development of particle accelerators in the 1920–30's was strongly influenced by the availability of intense sources of ions as well as the ability to shape magnetic fields and to produce high electric fields. Later, electron synchrotrons required intense electron sources. Still later the development of electron–positron colliding‐beam machines required positron sources. At present CERN and Fermilab are developing intense sources of antiprotons and related beam‐cooling techniques needed to make intense sources. We expect these antiproton sources to influence the development of future particle accelerators and storage rings just as profoundly as ion, electron and positron sources have in the past. One immediate use for the antiprotons is the creation of high‐energy antiproton–proton colliders.
