摘要:
The Atomic Energy Commission announced in April that, based on the unanimous recommendation of the Commission's General Advisory Committee, J. Robert Oppenheimer, director of the Institute for Advanced Study, has been named to receive the Commission's Enrico Fermi Award for 1963. The presentation ceremony is to take place in December.

摘要:
“It is proposed that the National Science Foundation support the purchase, installation, and initial operation of a three‐stage Van de Graaff accelerator to be installed in a new laboratory building to be provided by the University of Pittsburgh as part of its nuclear research program… “…The group in charge of developing the accelerator at the High Voltage Engineering Corporation is confident of achieving about 0.5 microamperes of protons or deuterons at 22 Mev. There is every reason to expect good beams of carbon and oxygen ions at about 60 Mev and 75 Mev respectively…”

摘要:
The search for elementary particles is as old as science itself. It is always the most advanced part of physics which strives for understanding of the fundamental constituents of matter. As physics progressed, the search for elementary particles moved on from chemistry to atomic physics, and then into nuclear physics. Not much more than a decade ago it separated from nuclear physics and became a new field, dealing no longer with the structure of atomic nuclei but with the structure of the constituents of nuclei, the protons and neutrons, and also with the structure of electrons and similar particles. This field is often referred to as high‐energy physics because of the fact that particle beams of extremely high energy are needed in most of its relevant experiments. This article is intended to provide a bird's‐eye view of the innovations resulting from recent elementary‐particle research and to show how they fit into the framework of the physics of this century.

摘要:
Do‐it‐yourself apparatus for better physics teaching is now within the reach of many small departments. Developed at a dozen leading colleges and universities, the apparatus ranges in scope from a simple kinetic‐theory demonstration to a student‐model mass spectrometer. All of the items can be built with the facilities of an average departmental shop. This opportunity for local construction of apparatus is offered through the Apparatus Drawings Project, sponsored jointly by the American Association of Physics Teachers and the American Institute of Physics. The recent publication by Plenum Press of a 162‐sheet portfolio and a 289‐page bound volume of shop drawings and construction notes on thirty pieces of apparatus brings to completion the project which was undertaken in 1959 with support from the National Science Foundation.

摘要:
Under the “publication‐charge plans” of most American physics journals, income needed to meet publishing expense is derived not only from subscription and dues payments, but also from a charge against authors' institutions at a fixed rate per page. The charge is not obligatory, editorial acceptance of articles being unaffected by its payment or nonpayment, but nearly all institutions, companies, and agencies supporting research have accepted the moral obligation of meeting it.

摘要:
The Fourth International Symposium on Color Centers in Alkali Halides, held at the II Physikalisches Institut of the Technische Hochschule, Stuttgart, on August 21–24, 1962, attracted approximately 130 scientists from fifteen countries, with almost half of the attendance coming from the US.
