The response from about ten percent of our 16 000 members of the American Institute of Physics must be encouraging to every physicist who takes pride in his profession. Members who have received and read the communications from the Institute regarding the badly needed Development Fund will recall that the Committee is asking only $150000 from the total individual membership and the other $350000 from industries and other sources. The encouragement comes out of the following breakdown of gifts received from individuals up to March 8, 1957.

The recent increase in new research results in physics hardly needs to be pointed out to those in the field. When single issues ofThe Physical Reviewnumber from 300 to 500 pages in spite of the fact that several new journals have been recently started, the physicist who is trying to “keep up” feels pretty much overwhelmed. How can he read, analyze, digest, and assimilate all the new information that might be helpful to him in his own researches or as a teacher?

The steady growth in understanding of the structure of matter and energy and of their interrelation that has resulted from the researches of physicists and of their predecessors among the natural philosophers, has been of increasing importance to mankind for the past few hundred years. However, until this century, there was small impact on society of the new knowledge obtained by these researches until very long after the new knowledge was obtained. Physicists were therefore remote from the scene of action, and the general public was indeed hardly conscious of them or of their profession. Their “action at a distance” permitted a remote and sheltered environment, sometimes characterized as an “ivory towered existence”.
