摘要:
Four years ago Jack Keuffel and his collaborators at the University of Utah found an anomalous muon flux in cosmic rays. Their recent results are consistent with the observation of a W particle, or intermediate vector boson, whose mass is estimated at 20 to 40 GeV. The W particle is believed to be the carrier of the weak force, with a role comparable to that of the pion in nuclear forces. The Utah analysis depends on a model of the W put forth by James D. Bjorken (SLAC), Sandip Pakvasa, San‐Fu Tuan and Walter Simmons (University of Hawaii). Results were reported late in August at the International Conference on Cosmic Rays in Hobart, Tasmania and the APS Division of Particles and Fields meeting in Rochester.

摘要:
Since Denys Wilkinson last year reopened the question of whether or not second‐class currents exist in the weak interaction (physics today, September 1970, page 17), a flurry of theoretical and experimental activity has occurred. And the waters are muddier than ever now. Second‐class currents are those that have the opposite behavior underG‐parity as first‐class currents. TheG‐parity operation is the product of charge conjugation and charge symmetry (which rotates the isotopic spin through 180 deg).

摘要:
In an earlier incarnation, it seems, when I did things in physics rather than for physics, I was dimly aware of having an information problem although I doubt that I would have used that term. I scannedPhys Revand certain other journals; I attended APS meetings. But somehow key items kept getting lost in the chinks—I found out about them much too late to use them properly. This frustration was compounded every time I decided to work on a new topic; tracking down the basic references was maddening. Later, when I became involved in physics information to the exclusion of physics research, I discovered a quote from Lord Rayleigh that summed up my feelings better than I could:

摘要:
Nuclear power generation currently represents the best hope for meeting America's long‐term energy demands. The President, in his June 1971 message to the Congress on energy policy, emphasized the role that nuclear power must play in the future and called for additional funds for the AEC fastbreeder program, the most likely design to fulfill the need.

摘要:
It is difficult to imagine a scientist or engineer who has not become painfully aware of the importance of metal surfaces in today's technological world. Indeed, most of the work in surface science has been initiated to explain puzzling surface problems encountered in other fields of science and engineering. An important aspect of this problem has involved the determination of the detailed topography of metal surfaces.
