摘要:
THERE ARE NOW ABOUT800 colleges and universities in the United States that offer physics courses at bachelor‐degree level. There are therefore about 800 physics curricula, most of which are either new and to some extent experimental, or old, unsatisfactory and due to be replaced soon.

摘要:
ASTRONG BASIS FOR GRADUATE STUDYunderlies the physics curriculum at Carleton College. The staff of the physics department at our small liberal‐arts college in Northfield, Minn, consists of five physicists and two technicians, and with this limited personnel we have not been able to set up an alternate track for those students intending to go into high‐school teaching or to seek employment with only the bachelor's degree.

摘要:
THERE IS A DECLINEin the productivity of small‐college physics departments as a group. The necessary, if not sufficient, ingredients for a successful undergraduate‐physics program are interested physicist‐teachers and capable students, and the desire of many in each of these groups to “be where the science action is” has resulted in their gravitating toward the large universities. The physics department at Pomona College (Claremont, Calif.) offers no studies beyond the baccalaureate and would seem to typify that kind of department marked for oblivion by George Pake and others.

摘要:
IN TERMS OF A PHYSICAL ANALOGYour curriculum is certainly an example of dynamic equilibrium—at times almost unstable equilibrium. It is in such a state largely as the result of tensions: tensions between theorists and experimentalists, tensions between classical ideas and modern ideas both as to subject matter and methods of approach, and tensions between an abstract, conceptual treatment and a phenomenological treatment. All of these tensions exist within the department itself; in addition there are tensions with our mathematics department as to who shall teach the applied mathematics, and that tension common to all liberal‐arts colleges between the need for a broad general education and the desirability of thorough specialized training in the major field.

摘要:
THESWARTHMORE HONORS PROGRAM, initiated in 1922 by President Frank Ayedelotte, has come to distinguish Swarthmore's educational processes and results from those of most other colleges and universities. In recent years about 90&percent; of those majoring in physics have either obtained doctoral degrees or are currently pursuing graduate work in physics at schools such as Cornell, Yale, Harvard and Princeton; the complete list includes at least 20 different universities. Swarthmore graduates are on the physics faculties of more than 25 colleges and universities, as well as on the staffs of most of the national laboratories.

摘要:
WE MUST CONTENDwith a variety of problems that are common to many small colleges. For example, in past years there has been a steady flow of comments about the inadequate laboratory equipment and the weak format of laboratory training. Furthermore there had been noticeable shortcomings in mathematics instruction in addition to difficulties with the physics curriculum. A final example is that the faculty must labor under severe handicaps such as heavy teaching loads, small financial resources and a lack of technical and secretarial assistance. On the other hand, of course, there are a number of advantages to a small college such as Villa Madonna. However, before I discuss more extensively the strengths and weaknesses of our college, including methods for evaluation, I will deal with the curriculum itself.
