摘要:
It isn't often that string theorists and particle physicists interested in phenomenology find themselves excited about the same body of work. But that's what happened earlier this year at the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics in Santa Barbara, California, during a three‐month long workshop on collider physics. “It's the first time in living memory these two opposite wings of particle theory are collaborating on something real,” observed workshop participant and Fermilab theorist Joseph Lykken.

摘要:
If electron pairs can condense into a macroscopic superconducting state, can't electron‐hole pairs—excitons—similarly condense to form a neutral superfluid? Such was the speculation of several theorists in the 1960s. Experimenters have been searching ever since for excitonic condensates. They have focused the search on the electron‐hole pairs created by shining light onto a semiconductor. Such studies have turned up some intriguing behavior, but still no conclusive proof of a condensate.

摘要:
“You could start a company.” That offhand comment by Jim Truchard got Jeff Kodosky and Bill Nowlin thinking. Within days, Truchard and his two employees at the Applied Research Laboratories (ARL) at the University of Texas at Austin (UT) decided to give it a go. That was in February 1976. By May, the trio had incorporated. Today, National Instruments Corp has annual sales topping $425 million, employs more than 3100 people, sells some 1500 hardware and software products, and, for five years running, has been rated byFortunemagazine as one of the 100 best companies to work for.

摘要:
The US remains the driving force in global science and technology R&D, but the National Science Board'sScience and Engineering Indicators 2004report points to an uncertain future because of a “troubling decline in the number of US citizens who are training to become scientists and engineers.” This decline is occurring, the report says, as the number of jobs that demand such training continues to grow.

摘要:
Thanks to particle physics, creaky old musical recordings can now be restored to pristine condition. The restoration technique, developed by physicists Vitaliy Fadeyev and Carl Haber of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, is a modification of a method used to measure the alignment of silicon detectors on CERN's upcoming ATLAS experiment. “We heard about the problem of audio preservation from a report on National Public Radio. So we thought first, why not use the same optical methods with which we were familiar?” says Haber. “The concept is groundbreaking and we believe it will have a major impact on sound archiving and preservation,” says Mark Roosa, director for preservation at the Library of Congress.

摘要:
A federal government science group has issued recommendations based on the National Research Council's 2002 reportConnecting Quarks With the Cosmos: Eleven Science Questions for the New Century, and dark‐energy research projects have received the strongest endorsement. The recommendations come from the Interagency Working Group on the Physics of the Universe (IWG), which was organized by the National Science and Technology Council's Committee on Science to examine federal investments required by the NRC study (see PHYSICSTODAY, July 2002, page 22).

摘要:
After more than 21 years, Irwin Shapiro has stepped down as head of the Harvard–Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Filling his shoes is Charles Alcock, who moves from the University of Pennsylvania to begin a five‐year term as director on 1 August.

摘要:
Less than a year after leaving his post as science adviser to US Secretary of State Colin Powell, Norman Neureiter has accepted the job as the first director of the new Center for Science, Technology and Security Policy at the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The center, funded with a three‐year, $2.2 million John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation grant, is to serve as “a smart, two‐way portal” between research institutions and the federal policymakers involved in national security issues, Neureiter said.
