摘要:
ON September 27, 1954, the Midwestern Universities Research Association (MURA) became a corporation under the laws of the State of Illinois. The present members are the Universities of Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, Purdue University, Indiana University, and Iowa State College. The Board of Directors of the Corporation includes one scientist and one administrative officer from each of the member universities. At the first regular annual meeting of the Board of Directors, a statement of the origin, objectives, and accomplishments of the Corporation was formulated for purposes of publication. Because of its general interest for physicists throughout the country, the statement is reproduced in full below.

摘要:
OVER the past half‐century, the number of science students among college graduates has dropped from about seventeen percent of the total to ten percent, a matter of steadily increasing concern to those who must deal with the realities of a shortage of trained manpower. Atomic Energy Commissioner Willard F. Libby addressed himself to the general subject at the Fall Convocation of the University of Chicago on December 17th.

摘要:
THE 1954 Research Corporation Award, consisting of an honorarium of $2500, a plaque, and a citation, was presented on January 18th to Willis E. Lamb, Jr., professor of physics at Stanford University, in recognition of his major contributions to the understanding of atomic structure and quantum electrodynamics. He was cited particularly for having executed “a number of brilliantly conceived and bold experiments” by which the shift in the energy levels of hydrogen atoms was demonstrated and measured, thus providing experimental results leading to “an extension and reformulation of quantum electrodynamics which has greatly increased our understanding of the forces between charged particles…and opened new fields of theoretical and experimental investigation into the nature of matter and radiation”.

摘要:
Many of the great physicists of the 19th Century were more familiar with today's problems of high‐polymer physics than were those of the early 20th Century. Maxwell, Boltzmann, Joule, and others were interested in many problems in this field. Most of these problems were later forgotten or ignored in favor of the more exciting, fashionable, and important problems of x‐rays, quantum theory, wave mechanics, and atomic structure, which have almost monopolized the attention of modern physicists.

摘要:
Einstein's resolution of the apparent incompatability between the Newtonian principle of relativity and the law of the constancy of the velocity of lightin vacuoby a reflective analysis of the physical conceptions of time and space disclosed, in theoretical physics, the unsuspected operation of an epistemological factor which had already been discerned in experimental physics by Duhem, Poincare´, and others. The analysis and interpretation of this factor have originated a variety of philosophies of science which are relevant here only as they offer unmistakable witness to the bearing of philosophy and its characteristic procedures upon physical science; a bearing in the ignorance of which one might achieve distinction in science without, however, understanding one's claim to distinction. On the assumption that this bearing presents the only available, solid, practical ground upon which scientist and philosopher can meet, each without benefit of the highly specialized and sustained training demanded for competence in these areas today, we, at Notre Dame, are in the process of constructing and presenting a course in philosophy for majors in physics and mathematics. The purpose of this paper is to sketch, for any helpful comment which it might evoke, the origins, content, spirit, and aims of this course.
