摘要:
Last year, Ferenc Krausz, Theodor Ha¨nsch, and their collaborators used femtosecond laser pulses to make isolated attosecond bursts of UV light. To pull off the feat, the team wielded precise and reproducible control over the five or so electric field oscillations that fit inside the amplitude envelope of a femtosecond pulse. With the right phasing between field and envelope, one specific oscillation in each pulse spawned an attosecond burst on demand (see PHYSICSTODAY, April 2003, page 27).

摘要:
The basic steps of quantum information processing are relatively straightforward, at least on paper: Prepare qubits in an appropriate initial state, let them evolve under the influence of one‐ and two‐qubit gate operations, and read out the results. But obtaining scalable physical implementations of these steps continues to challenge researchers, in part because of the conflicting requirements of ensuring sufficient isolation from the environment to maintain qubit coherence and allowing sufficient coupling between qubits to enable the requisite two‐qubit operations.

摘要:
It seems inevitable. If you send a short, narrow pulse of light through a dispersive medium, the light's component colors, traveling at different speeds, will string out along the propagation direction; diffraction will spread the pulse laterally; and what begins as a tight, white bullet of light becomes a blurred, rainbow‐colored streak.

摘要:
During the 2000 presidential election, in that time before the September 11th terrorist attacks, the stump speeches of George W. Bush and his Democratic opponent, Al Gore, focused on protecting Social Security, saving American education, expanding Medicare, raising or lowering taxes, and readying the military. If science was mentioned at all, it was usually in the context of missile defense, global warming, or Gore's role in creating the internet.
