摘要:
Scientists from ten countries, representing leading centers for the study of photon‐induced nuclear reactions, met at the National Bureau of Standards in Washington, D.C., on April 30 and May 1, 1958, for the Sixth Conference on Photonuclear Reactions. Previous conferences have been held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Pennsylvania, Case Institute of Technology, and the University of Chicago. Cosponsors of the meeting were the US Atomic Energy Commission, the Office of Naval Research, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and the National Bureau of Standards.

摘要:
Academic year 1957–58 was the first year of the visiting physicists program. Seventy‐five prominent physicists packed their bags and, putting aside research and administration for a few days, set out on visits to colleges to talk about physics. Another twenty‐eight visited high schools for a day. The activities during the visits left no doubt that physicists have a common interest in educational problems and that progress in solving the problems requires cooperation of the kind that made the visits possible.

摘要:
Many a person has had a single fruitful idea at the right time and has built his scientific life's work upon it. As a rule, however, things are somewhat different. Of a hundred ideas that one carries around with him, ninety prove on closer scrutiny to be incapable of realization, inopportune, trivial, false, or something of the sort. Of the remaining ten, there is always one that is most promising, most practical, and easiest to execute. It takes time to find this one; instinct and intuition often play a decisive role here. Once you have found this idea, use all your energies to put it into practice, lest it be anticipated by others.

摘要:
The problem of detecting feeble radio signals of short wavelengths, always important in obvious defense applications, has become crucial to the study of certain astrophysical questions by means of radio astronomy. Hitherto, the lower limit on the strength of a usefully detectable signal has been the background noise generated by the more or less “hot” electrons in the vacuum tube amplifiers or crystal detectors at the head of the receiver. This difficulty has led to suggestions for replacing these more conventional input stages by atomic resonant systems, which should be much less noisy. The most famous of these are the so‐called “masers” (Microwave Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation): the atomic beam maser of Townes, Gordon, and Zeiger, and the “Solid‐State Maser” of N. Bloembergen which uses a paramagnetic impurity concentration in a solid as resonant system. For purposes of comparison as well as by way of introduction, we shall begin with a simple statement of their common operating principle.

摘要:
FOLLOWING the lull in the publishing of research results that occurred during World War II it was commonly accepted among physicists that there would have to be some temporary increase in the sizes of physics journals so that declassifiable wartime results might be included in the open literature. The fact that in 1949 the archive journals published by the American Institute of Physics contained twice as many pages as they did in 1945 was considered neither surprising nor alarming, although it had been found advisable in 1949 to effect changes in type face, line spacing, and margin width to make room for more material per journal page. Publishing costs were rising. Printing and other production bottlenecks were commencing to be troublesome. The rapid growth in the number and output of physicists working in freshly developed areas of research suggested that steps would soon have to be taken to satisfy their special publishing needs.
