Take a superconducting loop, place it in an ultralow magnetic‐field device, and monitor the current with a Superconducting Quantum Interference Device for many months. That was the experiment that Blas Cabrera of Stanford University did in his search for a moving magnetic monopole. On Valentine's Day he found a single event consistent with one Dirac unit of magnetic charge. When rumors of the observation spread, the organizers of the Third Workshop on Grand Unification phoned Cabrera in Blacksburg, Virginia (where he was giving a colloquium), and asked him to address the Workshop the next morning (16 April). After a long, wee‐hours‐of‐the‐morning drive to Chapel Hill, N. C., Cabrera electrified the workshop participants with his careful, low‐key account of his possible monopole discovery.

When Murray Gell‐Mann and Abraham Pais predicted in 1955 that theK0meson should exhibit an oscillating probability for metamorphosis into its antiparticle, theK¯0,they cited the neutron as a counterexample. The conservation of baryon number, they pointed out, would prevent the neutron–antineutron analog of neutral‐kaon oscillation. But nowadays, with grand unified theories of the elementary particles very much in favor, all bets based on baryon‐number conservation are off. A prodigious experimental effort (PHYSICS TODAY, January 1980, page 17) attests to the widespread expectation that proton decay will be seen with a lifetime of about1031years.

The 100‐foot‐long electron linac at right is the heart of the new High Explosive Flash Radiography Facility at Livermore. Dedicated in April, the Facility is intended primarily for weapons experiments. It provides extremely intense, ultrashort bursts of highly penetrating x‐ray photons—3×1011four‐to‐five‐MeV photons in 60‐nanosec pulses. Thus it will render high‐time‐resolution x‐ray pictures of the deformation of interior components of nuclear‐warhead mockups during the detonation of their conventional explosives. The requirement that such implosions maintain a high degree of spherical symmetry leads to very demanding tolerances on the weapons components. The x‐ray flash is produced by a 4‐kA beam of 20‐MeV electrons. The accelerator is a ferrite‐core induction linac.

Silicon is one of the best understood of all materials because it lies at the heart of one of the central technologies of the twentieth century: integrated circuits. How much more can we learn about silicon and ways of handling it? Quite a lot, apparently, if the remarkable developments in laser annealing over the past five years are any indication.

摘要:
CLASSICALLY difficult nonlinear equations–those made up of polynomial expressions–can now be solved with reliability and speed. Recent advances in the mathematics of continuation methods at the General Motors Research Laboratories have practical implications for a wide range of scientific and engineering problems. The immediate application at General Motors is in mechanical design. The new method finds all eight solutions to three quadric equations in a few tenths of a second–fast enough for computer‐aided design on a moment‐to‐moment basis. Algorithms based on this method are critical to the functioning ofGMSOLID, an interactive design system which models the geometric characteristics of automotive parts.

We usually think of electrons in solids and liquids as behaving like free particles whose motion is impeded by occasional collisions. Evidence is now accumulating for charge carriers with qualitatively different behavior. These new charge carriers, in the simplest case, are extra electrons in condensed matter that become trapped in potential wells of their own creation, forming units known as small polarons.
