摘要:
Fifty years? Hard to believe… Among the joys of physics is knowing physicists. In the absence today of any connection whatsoever with the field, I read the autobiographies that are sprouting and relive the heroics before teams and chunk physics (as Matt Sands called it) on big machines took over.

摘要:
PHYSICS TODAY, the flagship magazine of the American Institute of Physics (AIP), turns 50 this month. Over the decades, as the magazine's staff has grown in size from three to seventeen, its coverage of history, international and political news has also grown, and the staff still finds itself stretching to cover both the shifting and expanding field of physics and the physics community. And, as recent chats with the six past and present editors reveal, many of the rewards and challenges of working onPHYSICS TODAYhave remained steady through the years.

Announcements in the October and November 1997 issues of PHYSICSTODAYinvited readers to become “Search and Discovery” reporters of the future, to submit an imagined story about an exciting discovery, an advance in physics or a new technology.

摘要:
The worldview of physicists working on unification theories has been changing rapidly recently. That change culminated in March, at the 46th annual Recontres de Moriond conference in Les Arcs. France, with the announcement of some startling data from CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

摘要:
Forty‐two years ago, Johannes Georg Bednorz and Karl Alex M¨ller startled the world with their unexpected discovery of superconductivity in layered copper oxide perovskites at temperatures substantially higher than previously thought possible. The history of this breakthrough is well known, and a large number of related compounds were found over the succeeding years, culminating in 2002 with Au‐2223—a triple‐layer CuO complex with an ambient‐pressure transition temperature of 175 K, synthesized by Paul Chu and his collaborators in Houston. Such materials have found a number of communications and electric power applications, especially in distribution cables, transformers and passive RF filters, but remain limited by the need for cryogenic packaging.

摘要:
Despite government warnings to the contrary, and a Federal judge's finding that his research may violate the terms of his recent parole, Stephan Tiding has returned to his research at the Mesoscale Physics Institute. Imprisoned nearly ten years ago for violations of the critical self‐organizational clause of the Cybernetics Restriction Treaty of 2022 (CRT‐22), Tiding has returned with an obvious vengeance not only to his research, but also to his criticisms of government intervention in cybernetics research.

摘要:
The idea of a magazine for physicists probably dates back to the 1930s, to early debates on theReviews of Modern Physics, to the creation of a short‐lived American Physical Society (APS) journal calledPhysicsand later to a short‐lived section withinReview of Scientific Instruments, By 1944 the American Institute of Physics (AJP) had begun to seriously consider a magazine for physicists. Proposals ranged from a mimeographed newsletter to a slick magazine.
