摘要:
In the year 1914 a young (at that time) British physicist, James Chadwick, who was sent to Germany to study the phenomena of radioactive decay, came across a rather interesting but, as it looked then, not very important discovery. He found that electrons emitted by radioactive substances in the process called beta transformation do not all possess the same velocity. In fact their velocities vary over a rather wide range.

摘要:
Every year at Christmas a course of science lectures for young people is given at the Royal Institution in Albemarle Street, London. These Christmas Juvenile Lectures are a long‐established and well‐known feature of the Christmas holidays, competing for popularity with the pantomimes, circuses, and other entertainments of the season. They are intended for boys and girls at school, the sons and daughters of members of the Institution and of those of the public who are fortunate enough to obtain tickets. The historic lecture theatre of the Institution is always crowded, and it is seldom that there is enough accommodation for all those who wish to come. The large and appreciative audience at the course recently given (Christmas 1947) by Professor E. K. Rideal, on “Chemical Reactions: How They Work,” the one hundred and eighteenth in the series, is evidence of the fact that the lectures have lost none of their popularity.

摘要:
How can a man, with a wife and three children, and no GI benefits, work for a doctor's degree and live on the one thousand dollar salary earned by half‐time teaching? It sounds impossible, but by canny control of the purse strings, and by keeping roomers, my wife and I are managing.

The physics of metals is a wide subject, and in this article I would like only to deal with one part of it, the study, as a subject of pure physics, of the mechanical properties of metals and alloys.

摘要:
It is a bare fact, whether or not one finds it an unhappy state of affairs, that a soap opera or a quiz show regularly attracts millions more listeners than a broadcast on any field of science. Naturally those responsible for putting broadcasts on the air shy away from the very word science in their program planning. The blame, of course, lies with radio for not devoting more time and energy to popularization—and with the scientists themselves for thinking too much about what they want to say and not enough about the people who are supposed to listen to it. It should surprise no one that the joint efforts of radio and the scientists have been so widely unheard.

摘要:
A compilation of the energy levels of the elements as derived from observations of atomic spectra is planned by the National Bureau of Standards. The data will be published in pamphlet form and will cover all information accumulated in the past fifteen years plus any previously available material. The first section of this work, a circular covering hydrogen through fluorine, is now available.
