The Seventh International Symposium on Combustion, the fifth such meeting since World War II and the first one outside of the United States, was held in London and Oxford, England, from August 27 to September 3, 1958. This seventh symposium, organized by The Combustion Institute and by The Institute of Fuels of Great Britain, was attended by 600 scientists and engineers, representing 19 nations.

Masers, rasers, growth of whiskers—these were among the things discussed at the 1958 meeting of the Midwest Solid‐State Physics Conference, which was held on November 1 at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. Some seventy persons were in attendance, representing institutions in six midwestern states.

The careers of trained and budding scientists are apt to be affected by what Congress does before June 30 about the expiring selective service and reserve forces legislation. What it does may also largely determine the future value of the professional services of scientists to the national security.

AS in previous years, the Placement Service of the American Institute of Physics organized an employment register on the fourth floor of the Hotel New Yorker in late January during the annual joint meeting of the American Physical Society and the American Association of Physics Teachers. Hopeful employers turned out in force, but even conservative estimates suggest that the available job openings outnumbered the available physicists by five to one.
