摘要:
During the past few years, plasma physics and magnetohydrodynamics have been the topics of many scientific meetings. In these meetings, the emphasis was placed mostly on the physical principles and scientific accomplishment with little discussion of the potential applications. For this reason, the Basic Sciences Committee of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers organized a meeting on the engineering aspects of magnetohydrodynamics last year with sessions on several different subjects. These helped to give to the audience a variegated view of the potential applications of MHD and the progress which is being made in each field. Last year's meeting attracted an audience of about four hundred.

摘要:
Three hundred and fifty years ago, long before Newton was born, at a time when the motions of freely falling bodies were first being carefully observed and analyzed, William Gilbert, the physician of Queen Elizabeth I, was collecting facts about magnets. These he published in his famous bookDe Magnete. Magnets were, at the time, thought of as curios having occult and magical properties. These Gilbert reviewed, but in addition he performed a most extraordinary feat of synthesis. He collected data on the orientation of compass needles carried around the surface of the earth earth by mariners and showed that the enormously varied observations could all be described by means of one basic assumption, that the earth itself was a magnet.

摘要:
Many influences in our modern life keep girls away from scientific subjects. Their aunts give them dolls rather than Mechano sets. Their schools prescribe dancing or cooking rather than rock study or shop work. Yet even if they did want physics, they would scarcely be able to get into physics classes in today's high schools. So said fifty teachers, principals, school superintendents, counselors, and scientists who took part in a one‐day discussion on “Physics Education for Secondary‐School Girls” which was held last May under the auspices of the Washington, D.C. Joint Board on Science Education at Immaculata High School and Junior College.

摘要:
Physicists today make very little use of statistical techniques. There was good reason for the minor role so long accorded the statistical evaluation of the errors in physical constants. When two laboratories make independent determinations, each may attach to its “best” value a ± sign followed by an estimatesof the error. This estimate of the error is often based upon a series of observations made under carefully controlled conditions. Experimenters soon discovered that if laboratories A and B reported valuesCAandCBfor the same constant, the difference &Dgr; betweenCAandCBwas almost always a large multiple of the estimated errorsa(orsb). Obviously these calculated errors had no more to do with the real errors than the neatness of the laboratory or the promptness with which the investigator answered his mail.

摘要:
The need for scientists to discuss informally their current research problems is illustrated by the well‐known hall effect in operation at all formal society meetings. In those situations where the technical subject matter can be sufficiently restricted so that the attendance is small, it seems useful to bring such informal discussions from the hall into the conference room. Random processes in solids fits in this category and the Fifth Annual Fluctuations in Solids Symposium held at Armour Research Foundation on May 19, with the cooperation of the Office of Naval Research, provided an informal forum for a review of recent progress in this field. As in past years' sessions, no formal papers were presented and the subjects discussed were determined entirely by the wishes of the participants. Able chairmanship is needed to prevent such a meeting from descending into random chaos and R. E. Burgess was equal to this task.

摘要:
DOROTHY Nickerson, color technologist with the US Department of Agriculture, has been selected as the third recipient of the Godlove Award of the Inter‐Society Color Council. The award, a gold diffraction grating embedded in a plastic prism, was presented at a banquet held April 11 during the 30th Annual Meeting of the Council in Rochester, N.Y. Miss Nickerson, who has served in the past both as secretary and as president of the Inter‐Society Color Council, is internationally known for her work on color standards and the color properties of light sources. She is the author of more than 30 papers in various scientific and technical publications and has served on the color committees of the Optical Society of America, the American Society for Testing Materials, the Illuminating Engineering Society, and the International Commission on Illumination.
