摘要:
A new paperinPhysical Review Lettersbrings word of the first improvement in two decades in the measurement of the electron's gyromagnetic ratio. The new measurement by Gerald Gabrielse's group at Harvard University ofge,the electron's magnetic moment in units of the Bohr magneton(eft/2me),carries an estimated uncertainty of 7.6 parts in1013.That's a sixfold improvement on the celebrated precision of the 1987 measurement that won a Nobel Prize for University of Washington experimenter Hans Dehmelt.

Reducing a system'sdimensions from three to two need not impoverish its physics. In fact, some of the richest, most intriguing physical phenomena show up in flat, thin layers. The fractional quantum Hall effect and high‐temperature superconductivity are essentially two‐dimensional—as is the topological phase transition known as Berezinskii‐Kosterlitz‐Thouless.

A major upgradeof the Beijing Electron–Positron Collider will give it the world's highest luminosity in the collision energy range 2 to 4.2 GeV, a physics‐rich niche that, China's high‐energy physicists hope, will attract international collaborators. The $77 million BEPC II is scheduled to start up in September 2007.

In the wakeof a May memorandum in which the National Science Board (NSB) called for the Bush administration to issue a “government‐wide directive” to encourage the “open exchange of data and results of research conducted by [government] scientists,” a spokesman for presidential science adviser John Marburger said no evidence exists “that the situation requires the development of a mandatory one‐size‐fits‐all government‐wide policy.”
