摘要:
The nearly 200 delegates who met at the Kenmore Hotel in Boston on March 10th to discuss the exploding‐wire phenomenon were assembled to continue the study of a phenomenon first described before the Royal Society in London in 1773. In the intervening years, such notables as Michael Faraday, Lord Rutherford, and the late John A. Anderson, the astronomer of Mt. Wilson Observatory, have experimented in the field.

摘要:
The Princeton‐Pennsylvania Accelerator is a 3‐billion‐electron‐volt proton synchrotron which is unique amongst large proton accelerators in that the pulse rate of 19 cycles per second is nearly 100 times higher than that usually used. Though the machine is still being tuned up, an intensity of6×1010 protons/pulse,or about1.2×1012 protons/secondhas already been reached, with considerably higher currents in prospect.

摘要:
At 4:00A.M.on November 4, 1943, Louis Slotin knocked on the doors of the Oak Ridge houses of M. D. Whitaker and R. L. Doan, directors of the Clinton Laboratories of the Manhattan District. Through the night, uranium slugs had been continuously loaded into the closely‐guarded Graphite Reactor at “Site X” in the rolling hills of East Tennessee, and Whitaker and Doan had left strict instructions that criticality should not be achieved until after they had arrived at work the following morning. However, the critical mass had been overestimated, and the enthusiasm of Henry Newson, Lyle Borst, and Slotin had perhaps been underestimated; at any rate, criticality came sooner than expected, and Slotin found it necessary to jump into a car, drive into town, and rouse the bosses from their beds for a dusty but starlit drive of fifteen miles to the reactor site.

摘要:
On February 6, a group of physicists, accelerator specialists, and interested observers met in Williamsburg, Virginia, to discuss for two days the recent past and immediate future of that venerable accelerator, the synchrocyclotron. This conference on high‐energy cyclotron improvement, held at the College of William and Mary, was intended to provide opportunity for a pooling of information which might help determine the extent to which new experiments with 100–800‐MeV protons (and their secondary particles) will be possible in the next few years. In this “intermediate” energy region, the synchrocyclotron still reigns supreme, as it has since the Berkeley184″machine first demonstrated the success of the phase‐stability principle of McMillan and Veksler in 1946. Few changes have been made in any of these machines since they were built, and “one&mgr;amp” is still the standard guesstimate of internal proton currents for most of them. Recent events have caused a rustle of activity directed toward greater internal beams, more efficient extraction of protons, and more efficient utilization of secondary‐particle beams.
