摘要:
Of the obstacles to building a quantum computer, two remain especially tough to surmount: scaling up from a few‐qubit logic gate to a many‐qubit device and sustaining the qubits' coherence long enough to do a worthwhile and accurate calculation.

摘要:
The abrupt reconnection of magnetic flux lines embedded in plasmas is an important mechanism for transferring energy from the magnetic field to the motion of plasma particles. Magnetic reconnection manifests itself spectacularly on diverse scales: solar flares, auroras from the penetration of solar wind into Earth's magnetosphere, and containment failures in laboratory tokamaks. And reconnection is suspected in neutron‐star quakes, gamma‐ray bursts, and jet formation in black‐hole accretion disks.

摘要:
For the past two decades, researchers have envisioned creating microfluidic circuits to control the mixing and reactions of chemicals that flow within 100‐micron‐wide channels on a single chip. The high surface‐to‐volume ratio in such hair‐thin channels lowers the diffusion times of reagents, and each circuit can be computer designed to exploit the flexibility that an integrated platform provides. To realize that vision, researchers have developed miniaturized versions of the required plumbing: valves, pumps, mixers, filters, and separators. And thanks to photolithography advances inherited from the microelectronics industry and more recent soft lithographic methods, fabricating microfluidic circuits is straightforward (see the article by George Whitesides and Abraham Stroock in PHYSICSTODAY, June 2001, page 42).

摘要:
Catherine Bre´chignac is back in the driver's seat of the CNRS, France's leading research agency. Her appointment as president on 11 January came on the heels of the resignation of her predecessor, Bernard Meunier; right after she took office, CNRS director general Bernard Larrouturou was fired. The worst of the latest crisis at CNRS may be over, but many French researchers fear that a more serious threat to science looms in a law awaiting passage by the country's parliament.

摘要:
Within the first 10 minutes of the unveiling of the administration's fiscal year 2007 science and technology budget on 6 February, leading federal science officials were using superlatives like “historic,” “spectacular,” “extraordinary,” and “exciting.” For those in the US physical sciences community who have seen five years of flat non‐defense federal research funding, the superlatives certainly appear apt.

摘要:
When the final federal science budget for fiscal year 2006 was passed by the US Congress in December, a cut of more than 8&percent; in the nuclear physics budget at the Department of Energy had immediate and severe consequences for Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) director Praveen Chaudhari. He had a billion‐dollar machine, the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, and not nearly enough money to operate it. Chaudhari announced that RHIC's planned polarized‐proton run for 2006 would be canceled and about 100 employees laid off (see PHYSICSTODAY, January 2006, page 28).
