摘要:
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has awarded the 1989 Nobel Physics Prize to three physicists who have made important contributions to “the development of atomic precision spectroscopy.” The new laureates are Norman Ramsey of Harvard University, Hans Dehmelt of the University of Washington and Wolfgang Paul of the University of Bonn. Their work laid the basis for the cesium clock standard, which today is accurate to 2 parts in1014,and for a possible successor based on the optical transition of a single isolated ion. Ramsey helped develop the hydrogen maser, which is far more stable than the cesium clock for time periods of a few hours and which may be made more stable yet. Techniques developed by the three prizewinners have enabled high‐precision tests of general relativity and quantum electrodynamics and accurate measurements of a number of physical constants.

摘要:
The year 1983 marked the end of a particularly noteworthy decade in the development of elementaryparticle physics. Between 1973 and 1983 there were three accomplishments of special, perhaps historic, importance:▹ The theoretical and experimental unification of the forces that govern all of the phenomena of both electromagnetism and the weak interactions.▹ The recognition that the strongly interacting particles (nucleons, mesons and other hadrons) are in fact made of still smaller entities, now known as quarks, and the development of a tentative theory of the force between the quarks.▹ The identification of three almost identical (except for mass) families of elementary “particles,” each family consisting of two quarks, one charged lepton (the electron, the muon or the tau) and a neutrino.

摘要:
The owl depicted on the signet ring George Uhlenbeck used to wear—“Uhlenbeck” in German means “owl's brook”—derives from his family's coat of arms. The shield reads, in the language of heraldry: Azure, on a tree trunk proper rising from water argent, an owl contourne, head affronty. In plain language, it depicts an owl with its head turned toward you, sitting on a tree trunk in natural color, which rises up out of a silvery brook. (I owe the transcription of the Dutch blazon into English heraldry to Michael Maclagan, the Richmond Herald in the College of Arms, in London.)

摘要:
When Robert Oppenheimer was president of the APS, just 40 years ago, he observed that, fortunately for the society, it was impossible for a president to do any great damage in a one‐year term. We now have to reassess this observation. Because of the untimely death of my intended successor, George Vineyard, I have had two years to inflict havoc and chaos. Happily, the more permanent staff of the society—Bill Havens, Harry Lustig, Miriam Forman and Bob Park—are all deft at damage‐limiting techniques, and the society has survived, rather well I think, even two years of a transient president.
