CERN's Intersecting Storage Rings have produced collisions between protons several months ahead of schedule, and experiments are scheduled to begin with the rings around the middle of the year. The first successful collisions occurred on 27 January with 15‐GeV protons, and by 17 February the energy had been boosted to 22.5 GeV. When operated at the full energy of 28 GeV, the collisions will correspond to a beam of 1700 GeV hitting a stationary target.

Two recent experiments have brought new life to the argument about whether theA2meson is split—that is, whether it exists as two particles having identical properties except for a 3&percent; difference in mass. The experiments, one performed at CERN by a CERN–Munich group and the other at Brookhaven, both report data indicating theA2isnotsplit. S. J. Lindenbaum, the leader of the Brookhaven group, presented data at the annual APS meeting in New York that he claims have less than one chance in a million of being consistent with a two‐peak (dipole) mass formula. (The group has also published a letter inPhysical Review Letters26, 413, 1971.)

An elegant way to study dissociative molecular excited states has grown up during the past few years. At the “New Vistas for Chemical Physics” session at the New York American Physical Society Meeting, Kent R. Wilson of the University of California, La Jolla, described “photofragment spectroscopy,” which enables Wilson and his coworkers to study both the excited states of a molecule and the photodissociation fragments it produces, by measuring the mass, translational energy and angular distributions of the fragments. Detailed information on bound excited states has long been available from ultraviolet and visible spectroscopy, but such information for dissociative states has been rare, although the dissociative states are the more common. Because some of the molecules Wilson has studied are among the major photochemically active pollutants of the atmosphere, the results may be interesting to environmentalists as well as to chemical physicists.

摘要:
A new temperature scale in the range from 1 to 20 degrees K has been developed by T. C. Cetas and Clayton A. Swenson of Ames Laboratory and Iowa State University. The new scale, which is preserved for use by germanium resistance thermometers, is based on precise susceptibility measurement of two paramagnetic salts, chromic methyl‐ammonium alum and manganous ammonium sulfate. Based on the National Bureau of Standards 1955 platinum resistance thermometer scale, the Iowa scale is believed to be accurate to better than 1 millidegree K over the specified range.

Women physicists are a rare breed, but most of us agree that we need more of them. They have many problems in common with other professional women, but some are peculiar to physics. Many would like to work part time while raising families. Some feel that the system should have a bias built in to help women get into science and stay there. Others caution against lowering our standards. How do we provide models for young girls to identify with? Is the situation different abroad? Can the federal government help? Can genuine discrimination be observed?

Recently at a meeting of a scientific society I found myself listening to a panel discussion ostensibly devoted to give‐and‐take discussion of a certain topic dear to my heart. I have attended—and participated in—several such discussions, and have usually found them less helpful than one would wish. I had never understood the reason for this, but, as I listened, something said by one of the panelists struck a responsive chord inside me. I soon recognized the deep truth of what he said, and a whole host of previous panel experiences were thereby illuminated.
