If we knew a precise value for the frequency of the length standard, or, alternatively, for the wavelength of the frequency standard, we would have a good way to define the velocity of lightc. But until now the hitch has been that wavelength measurements, although fairly easily done in the visible through the near infrared (to three microns or so), are difficult at longer wavelengths, whereas frequency measurements have until recently been limited to the microwave region. Now a group at the National Bureau of Standards in Boulder, Colorado, mixing their oscillators by means of a metal–metal diode originally used at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, reports the highest “absolute” frequency measurement to date.

In the search for high‐temperature superconductors the path led from individual elements to binary compounds, to pseudobinary compounds, and eventually to ternary compounds. At first at least one of the elements in the binary compound was superconducting. Eventually hundreds of binary compounds were found in which neither of the elements was superconducting above 1 K.

摘要:
The shortest‐wavelength laser light yet obtained has been produced by stimulated emission in the molecular‐hydrogen Werner bands. These 1160–1240‐a˚ transitions in the vacuum ultraviolet correspond to photon energies of about 10 eV, which are suitable for photochemical, photodissociation and photoionization experiments in most molecules. Lasers with output in this frequency range have been reported independently and nearly simultaneously by two different groups—Ronald W. Waynant of the Naval Research Laboratory, and Rod Hodgson and Russell Dreyfus of the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center. Both publications are in the 28 February issue ofPhysical Review Letters(pages 533 and 536 respectively).

Throughout the study of microscopic physics, new frontiers are opened whenever a new basic energy scale is reached. We have the case of atomic and molecular physics with the electron‐volt energy scale, nuclear physics with the MeV energy scale and the present stronginteraction physics with the GeV energy scale. In each case, at the energy scale of interest, we encounter a vastly rich structure of multiple energy levels and detailed dynamics; yet, when viewed against a much larger energy scale, this superstructure simply dissolves into the continuum.

摘要:
A frantic search for nuclei considerably heavier than any known up to now has been going on for the past five years. The search for these “superheavy” nuclei has included attempts to produce them artificially, as products of various reactions at accelerators throughout the world, as well as attempts to find them in nature. Man's quest in nature has led him from a 14th‐century Russian Orthodox church to the ocean floor off the Fiji Islands, from California platinum and gold mines to meteorites and moon rocks. None of these attempts have yet resulted in any conclusive evidence for the existence of superheavy nuclei. But with the Berkeley Super‐HILAC now joining accelerators in the USSR and France that are potentially capable of producing them, the coming years will witness a renewed search for these nuclei, whose existence was predicted seven years ago.

摘要:
My aim here is to state positively that in going into industry a physicist has every opportunity for a rewarding, satisfying and successful career. The match between him and industry will depend both on his training and on the kind of person he is, and I will accordingly have something to say about the curriculum for physicists, both in physics areas and related fields, and about desirable personality traits for a physicist in industry. In addition I will discuss the responsibilities of industry to the physicist and comment briefly on the future prospects for the job market, where I see a probable steady, though small, increase in the number of positions that will become available.
