摘要:
For more than two years, condensed matter physicists were enthralled by results coming out of Bell Labs, Lucent Technologies, where researchers had developed a technique to make organic materials behave in amazing new ways: as superconductors, as lasers, as Josephson junctions, and as single‐molecule transistors. (PHYSICSTODAYran news stories on some of these topics in May 2000, page 23; September 2000, page 17; January 2001, page 15; and October 2001, page 19.) Increasingly, however, enthusiasm gave way to frustration, as research groups were unable to reproduce the results. Was the technique exceedingly difficult to master, or was something else amiss?

摘要:
Does an atom of antihydrogen(H)have the same energy levels as its charge conjugate, the hydrogen atom? Yes, according to the venerableCPTtheorem, which proclaims the invariance of the laws of physics under the simultaneous operation of charge conjugation (C), parity inversion (P), and time reversal (T). Does antimatter fall at the same rate as ordinary matter in a gravitational field? It should, if the equivalence principle of general relativity holds. AlthoughCPTinvariance has been tested to high precision in several systems, its importance impels us to explore its limits: Comparing H toHshould provide the most sensitive test yet of a system involving both a baryon and a lepton. As for gravitational properties, they have not yet been measured on antimatter. To conduct either test, though, one needs large quantities ofHatoms at low enough temperatures to make high‐precision measurements.

摘要:
The 14 OctoberPhysical Review Lettersbrought us a new measurement ofG, Newton's gravitational constant, by Stephan Schlamminger and coworkers at the University of Zu¨rich. The group employed a novel method that abjures the traditional torsion balance. Why should this be of more than passing interest to anyone but a dedicated metrologist?

摘要:
When a cook drops a live lobster into boiling brine, the lobster's shell soon changes color from greenish black to orangy red. The molecular actors in this biological redshift have been known for years. Crustacyanin, the colorant in lobster shell, consists of pigment molecules confined in a colorless multiprotein cage. On heating, the proteins denature, releasing their grip on the pigment molecules. Unshackled, the pigment molecules promptly turn red.

摘要:
With one exception, an assessment of large research facilities was met this past summer with the respect that Germany's highly regarded Wissenschaftsrat, or national science council, is accustomed to. Not so with the European Spallation Source. In that case, the ensuing quarrel between the science council and many of the experts it had appointed to review the ESS made headlines in German newspapers. The experts have not retracted their claims that the ESS review process was flawed, but now the project's planners are focusing on bolstering their scientific case in the hopes of winning the science council's endorsement on appeal.

摘要:
In a speech last February at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in Boston, John Marburger, director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy, defended the significant tilt toward the life sciences in federal science funding. Science was within reach of a “frontier of complexity” that “creates far more opportunities in the life sciences,” he said. “Given the new atomic‐level capabilities [of biological research], the life sciences may still be underfunded relative to the physical sciences,” he concluded.

摘要:
Modern physics drew nearly $1.8 million at an auction on 4 October. “It was a groundbreaking sale,” says Francis Wahlgren, head of the books and manuscripts department at Christie's auction house in New York City. “We've handled Einstein before, but never within the whole context of how he fits into the works of other physicists.”
