摘要:
What is the appropriate scientific response to a human tragedy? Thorne Lay of the University of California, Santa Cruz asked himself and his colleagues that question in the days following the 26 December 2004 earthquake off the coast of Sumatra. Like the rest of us, he and other geophysicists saw disturbing images of thousands of bodies floating in the devastation from the tsunami. A flurry of e‐mails and a New Year's Eve conference call from Lay to his colleagues soon initiated a collective effort from the seismological community to analyze what happened. Their hope was to replace the usual race to publication among competing groups with a more concerted response: a single account that would provide a complete and robust characterization of the earthquake.

摘要:
A 19th‐century surgeon had little choice: To reach and operate on an internal organ, he had to cut his patient open. Since the late 20th century, however, procedures have been developed that involve little or no cutting. Compared with major surgery, these minimally invasive procedures are quicker, cheaper, less debilitating, and usually more successful.

摘要:
When an earthquake knocked out the power in Los Angeles in 1994, people were puzzled by the starry sky. Ed Krupp, director of Griffith Observatory, recalls, “People saw something they'd never seen before in an urban environment—or never in their lives. We got two or three dozen calls. They wanted to know, Did the earthquake cause it?”

摘要:
Stephen Low isn't sure which line o dialog in his award‐winning 2003 IMAX filmVolcanoes of the Deep Searaised the ire of creationists. Maybe it was the one about soft‐bodied creatures that were in the seas “hundreds of millions or even a billion years ago.” Or perhaps it was the description of a deep‐sea thermal vent as a place that “had seen a billion years of darkness yet there was no night.”

摘要:
Despite the thriving trade in manuscripts that occurred throughout the Greek and Roman empires, many plays, poems, and philosophical musings by writers such as Aeschylus, Euripides, Aristophanes, and Sophocles have been lost. Now, a collaboration between Oxford University and Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah, is revolutionizing paleography by rescuing words and images from charred and battered fragments of ancient scrolls.
