摘要:
Consider an actor in a hit show on Broadway, and contrast him with a physicist addressing the American Physical Society. The actor has all the advantages. He is speaking lines written for him by a master of the art of commanding the interest of an audience (remember that we are postulating a hit show). He has a gift for acting, and also a long experience in the art; otherwise he would not be in the cast. Even so, he is not allowed to speak his lines in any way that occurs to him. Every phrase, every inflection, every gesture, even the position that he is to take on the stage, has been tested or even prescribed by a professional director, who does not hesitate to give him mandatory instructions, or even to alter the lines if they seem ineffective.

摘要:
The development of thermonuclear weapons in recent years has placed within the grasp of mankind a new, cheap, and almost inexhaustible source of energy. The principal ingredient in thermonuclear reactions is deuterium, a heavy isotope of hydrogen. Deuterium occurs naturally wherever hydrogen is found, since about 0.015 percent of all hydrogen is the heavy isotope,H2.Although the percentage seems low, the total amount of deuterium is extraordinarily large, and a relatively inexpensive process for extracting the deuterium from natural hydrogen has been invented. The atmosphere and oceans of the earth contain enough thermonuclear fuel to last mankind for millions of years at a thousand times the present rate of energy consumption. But, since thermonuclear energy has so far been available only in explosive form, it has not yet been harnessed for nondestructive purposes. Several major research programs currently under way in the United States and other countries are aimed at developing methods of containing and controlling fusion reactions to permit adapting their power output to conventional power‐distribution systems. Substantial progress has been made in this field, but it may be many years before a practical controlled‐fusion machine will be a reality.

摘要:
In the fifteen years since World War II the technical report as a medium of scientific and technical communication has increased rapidly in importance. The increased volume is primarily a result of the growth of defense‐related research and development programs sponsored by Government agencies. Normal channels of scientific reporting such as books and journals do not satisfy the requirements of security and speed of communication. Industrial research and development have led to a further increase in the production of technical reports.

摘要:
If scholastic aptitude and ability could be objectively determined by measuring people's heights, there would be no need for this article. But aptitude and ability cannot be measured so simply. Their assessment is at best tentative and fallible.

摘要:
The Spring Meeting of the New York State Section of the American Physical Society was held at LeMoyne College in Syracuse on April 14 and 15, 1961. More than 250 persons attended, mainly from the New York state area, although a few came from as far as California. This was the fourth in a series of highly successful semiannual meetings, each devoted to a selected current topic in physics. In contrast to Physical Society meetings on a national scale and topical conferences where research workers exchange ideas with others in the same field, each of these meetings is designed to bring to physicists the latest developments in an important and rapidly growing area of physics not generally their speciality. Meetings are held at various locations in the state, frequently upon invitation by a company or university. Previous meetings of the current series have been held at Rochester on fuel cells, at Hamilton on radio astronomy, and at Binghamton on computers.
