摘要:
Since 1998, overwhelming evidence has been accumulating that distant type Ia supernovae appear systematically dimmer than one would expect from their redshifts in a universe whose expansion is slowing down. One infers the distance of such a supernova from its apparent brightness, and its redshift is a direct measure of the total expansion of the cosmos since the light was emitted. The relation between redshift and distance over a large range of redshifts traces the history of cosmic expansion (see the article by Saul Perlmutter in PHYSICSTODAY, April 2003, page 53.)

摘要:
An important objective in surface science and modern technology is the development of simple recipes for fabricating nanostructures such as quantum dots, wires, and thin films. What makes the project challenging is that Nature places strict constraints on how atoms and surfaces interact. In general, you want the things you build on surfaces to stick. But you also want to move those same things into place. The first requires strong binding; the second, weak binding.

摘要:
According to Inuit legend, the goddess Sedna lives beneath the frigid Arctic seas. And so in late 2003, when Caltech's Michael E. Brown, working with Chadwick Trujillo of the Gemini Observatory and David Rabinowitz of Yale University, discovered an outer Solar System object whose surface temperature never rises much above 30 K, they proposed that it be named after the Inuit deity.

摘要:
Our biological clocks, like those of other vertebrates, keep time thanks to the response to sunlight of the pineal gland. Stuck underneath our cerebral hemispheres, the lentil‐sized gland can't detect light directly. Rather, it receives signals from our eyes via a tortuous circuit of nerve cells. Whatever pineal photosensitivity our ancestors once enjoyed lost out to a higher evolutionary priority: boosting the computing power of the mammalian brain.
