摘要:
On 27 December 2004, gamma‐ and x‐ray detectors aboard seven spacecraft were momentarily saturated by a 0.2‐second gamma‐ray pulse of unprecedented intensity. Another dozen orbiters detected the pulse with particle detectors activated by the sudden flood of high‐energy photons. It was, in fact, the brightest transient event ever recorded by astronomical instruments. Appearing in the 28 April 2005 issue ofNature, the first five published papers on the giant flare make a strong case that its cause was a global rearrangement of the crust and magnetosphere of a neutron star, on the far side of the galaxy, whose magnetic field is a thousand times stronger than that of the more pedestrian neutron stars we know as radio pulsars.

摘要:
Send a high‐intensity ultrasound wave through a container of liquid, and it's not surprising to find that the alternating cycles of acoustic compression and rarefaction create micron‐sized bubbles in the liquid and cause them to successively expand and contract. Whatismysterious is to see those bubbles emit light. Somehow, the energy dispersed in an acoustic wave‐field becomes sufficiently concentrated to produce visible light.

摘要:
At the banquet that concluded the Strings '98 conference held in Santa Barbara, California, some 300 theoretical physicists danced the “Maldacena,” a version of the then‐popular Macarena. Their giddy behavior was inspired by Juan Maldacena's conjecture that a profound relationship exists between four‐dimensional gauge theories and string theories formulated in 10 dimensions.

摘要:
“We have an enormously exciting new territory we are going to pursue. It has discovery potential and science potential written all over it,” says Jonathan Dorfan, speaking of the x‐ray free‐electron laser (XFEL) to be built at SLAC, where he is director. The German Electron Synchrotron laboratory (DESY) in Hamburg and RIKEN's Harima Institute in Japan have similar projects in the works.
