摘要:
With the exception of a few supernova remnants which are in our galaxy, most cosmic radio sources are “radio galaxies”. Although flare stars do emit radio waves occasionally, no ordinary stars with strong, steady radio emission have been found. The typical optical power of stars is from1030 ergs/sec(white dwarfs) to1038 ergs/sec(super giants). For comparison, the optical power of the sun is4×1033 ergs/sec.The typical radio power of supernova remnants is around1036 ergs/sec.For a giant galaxy (containing approximately1011−1012stars with a total mass of around1011⊙,where⊙ = solarmass = 2×1033 g), the optical power is around1044 ergs/sec.Radio emission from normal galaxies is generally weaker, the power ranging from1037−1039 ergs/sec.For certain peculiar galaxies, the so‐called “radio galaxies,” the radio emission rate ranges from1041−1044.5 ergs/sec.

摘要:
“Can Four‐Year Colleges Prepare Physics Majors for Graduate Work in Physics?” In a paper bearing this title George Pake discussed some of the problems faced by four‐year colleges trying to prepare physics majors. Dr. Pake's article aroused a great deal of interest and concern. To a large extent it was the trigger for the formation of the Committee on Physics Faculties in Colleges, set up by the American Association of Physics Teachers and the American Institute of Physics, with the aid of a grant by the National Science Foundation. The Committee (COPFIC) was asked to study the problems of physics in the colleges, particularly from the point of view of the conditions necessary to recruit able physics faculty members and to retain them there.

摘要:
The year 1963 saw many exciting advances in physics, including such exotic items as gravitational collapse, anti‐Xi particles, bootstrap dynamics, to say nothing of the extraordinary fertility of new ideas in the fields of lasers and plasmas. More appropriate, however, for discussion in an AIP report are recent striking developments in what one might more properly call the sociology of physics.

摘要:
In the February 1964 number of this journal, Virgil E. Bottom discusses three patents granted to the late J. E. Lilienfeld in the years 1930–1933 on a type of solid‐state amplifier invented by him in the latter half of the 1920's. Attention is drawn by Dr. Bottom to similarity in operation of these amplifiers with that of the later transistor amplifiers. The reader is left with the conclusion that they are essentially the same, and with doubt as to whether the basic patents on the type‐A transistor or thep‐nJunction transistor were rightfully granted. Having familiarity with these Lilienfeld patents and having followed some of Dr. Lilienfeld's other work, I may be able to add some constructive comments to the discussion.

摘要:
The Ernest Orlando Lawrence Memorial Awards for 1964, given by the Atomic Energy Commission for recent meritorious contributions in the field of atomic energy, were presented to five scientists at a ceremony held on April 30 at the National Academy of Sciences building in Washington, D.C. Those receiving the awards were:Jacob Bigeleisen of Brookhaven National Laboratory “for outstanding theoretical contributions and experimental advances in the separation of isotopes”. Dr. Bigeleisen is known for his work in chemical isotope effects, in particular isotopic fractionation in chemical equilibrium reactions, changes in chemical reaction rates caused by isotopic substitution, and vapor pressures of isotopic molecules.

摘要:
Gertrude Rand Ferree has been awarded the Gold Medal of the Illuminating Engineering Society. Dr. Rand, together with her late husband, Dr. Clarence E. Ferree, established much of the basic information about the eye and its response to light. They studied speed of vision, improvement of visual activity, and contrast sensitivity of normal and abnormal eyes. Their names have appeared on some 50 technical papers as well as on a number of patents for lighting devices and optical and ophthalmological instruments, including the Ferree‐Rand perimeter, the light sense tester, and the central vision scotometer.

摘要:
The Coblentz Society, organizers of the infrared spectroscopy symposia at the annual “Pittsburgh Conferences” on analytical chemistry and spectroscopy, has established a prize in memory of the late W. W. Coblentz. A physicist with the National Bureau of Standards and one of the pioneers in the study of infrared spectra, Dr. Coblentz died on September 15, 1962.
