InPHYSICS TODAY, November, page 55 we would like to rectify three errors in the map of France. Lyon and Marseille should have been spelled in French for consistency. Clermont should be Clermont‐Ferrand, which is located in the center of France. Saclay is misleading because it is a suburb of Paris in which the Atomic Energy Commission is located.

NEW EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUEShave been joined by novel theoretical approaches to give great impetus to the study of phase transitions. The systems studied include vapors near their critical points, ferromagnets near their Curie temperatures, antiferromagnets near their Ne´el points and the superfluid transitions. All these phase transitions, although apparently very different, show surprising similarities in their behavior near the critical point.

SONIC BOOMSare explosive sounds that occur without warning. Sometimes annoying because of their startle effects and their ability to shake buildings, these sounds pose a unique problem for the orderly development of high‐speed air transport. Although booms from military aircraft are widely observed around the world, the real concern is for proposed commercial airtransport operations that will cause repeated booms over very large areas. What are the effects of sonic booms and what steps can be taken to minimize the exposure to a suitable level?

摘要:
SOLIDS CAN GENERATEvisible light in several ways. A solid raised to sufficiently high temperature, for example, will emit light, a principle that is used in the tungsten incandescent lamp. But practical considerations limit the efficiency and reliability of such a lamp. In electroluminescence, however, electronic energy can be converted directly into light, and in principle, there is nothing to prevent this process from being very efficient in a simple rugged device operating at room temperature (figures 1–3). Needless to say, such a possibility has aroused much curiosity.

摘要:
A new kind of particle accelerator uses the self field of an electron ring to trap protons (or other positive ions) and then accelerates the entire collection of particles. Physicists at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, USSR, starting with 1.5‐MeV elec´trons, are planning to accelerate protons as energetic as 1 GeV.

Musicis the name of a 112‐MeV sectored isochronous cyclotron being built at the University of Maryland. The $3‐million accelerator, which will be the largest of its type in the world, is being built by Raytheon. Experiments should start in January 1969.

摘要:
Just going into use at the University of Toledo, Ohio is a 40‐in. (102‐cm) Coude reflecting telescope especially designed for high‐dispersion spectroscopy. An unusual hollow‐pier support enables it to accommodate the largest spectrograph one can design with available and contemplated gratings. Also unusual are its optics: All of them (primary, secondaries, folding flats, collimators) are made of a new material,CER‐VIT, developed by Owens‐Illinois just in time for the Toledo telescope.
