摘要:
Convincing evidence has been accumulating in recent months for the existence of a quite new kind of elementary particle—a so‐called exotic hadron. Four groups of experimenters have now reported the observation of a baryon with strangenessS = +1produced at accelerators of modest energy. What's so exotic about a baryon with positive strangeness, and why is it exciting great interest among particle physicists?

摘要:
In today's world of DVDs and gigabyte hard drives, storing data on magnetic tapes seems rather quaint. But tape remains a choice medium for archiving very large volumes. Unlike a magnetic disk, a tape can be wound up to create a capacious, three‐dimensional data store. Of course, rewinding the tape to reach the bytes you want takes time. An ideal storage medium would combine tape's compact three‐dimensionality with a disk drive's speedy access.

摘要:
Though they didn't know it at the time, Galileo and his 17th‐century rivals were the first to observe the sites of solar flares. What they saw through their crude telescopes were sunspots—dark patches on the solar disk where intense magnetic fields smother the upwelling of bright hot plasma.

摘要:
Boost‐phase missile defense, the strategy of destroying a hostile intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) as it climbs into the sky during the first few minutes of flight, is virtually impossible in all but a few limited circumstances, according to a 476‐page report released in July by the American Physical Society. Although the report's authors were careful not to make any policy statements or recommendations, they did conclude that “when all factors are considered none of the boost‐phase defense concepts studied would be viable for the foreseeable future to defend the nation against even first‐generation solid‐propellant ICBMs.”

摘要:
A particle physics drought looms in Germany, from the time the plug is pulled on the Hadron Electron Ring Accelerator Facility (HERA) at the end of 2006 until whenever activity on the world's next linear collider revs up. “We face the danger of shutting down a unique accelerator irrevocably, and then sitting here for a very long time without particle physics,” says Christian Kiesling of the Max Planck Institute for Physics in Munich and a member of the team that is pushing to extend HERA's lifetime. For the extension to happen, proponents will have to scrape together money and manpower and win over the management of the accelerator's parent lab, the German Electron Synchrotron (DESY) in Hamburg.

摘要:
At an all‐day public discussion on 31 July about the planned demise of NASA's Hubble Space Telescope, Anne Kinney informed the crowd of NASA's intention: a controlled deorbit of the HST in 2010. This plan would allow NASA to concentrate on the James Webb Space Telescope, the HST's designated successor (see the box on page 30). NASA officials are worried that extending the HST's life would drain funds from the space science budget and delay JWST's launch beyond 2011. “We believe it's a good plan… for both the HST and JWST,” said Kinney, division director of astronomy and physics at NASA's office of space science.
