摘要:
Given the initial functional specifications for a product, a designer must create the description of a physical device that meets those requirements. The final design must simultaneously meet cost and quality requirements, as well as meet the constraints imposed by activities such as manufacturing, assembly, and maintenance. Mechanical designs are often composed of highly integrated, tightly coupled components where the interactions are essential to the behavior and economic execution of the design. Therefore, concurrent rather than sequential consideration of requirements, such as structural, thermal, and manufacturing constraints, will result in superior designs

摘要:
Current design approaches for composite materials may typically be categorized as either (a) dependent on the experience of seasoned designers of manufacturing protocols for composites or (b) dependent on fundamental studies of the materials involved. We are currently undertaking research to combine these two approaches in an artificial intelligence-based problem-solving system. We report research in progress aimed at automating capability (a) by leveraging a known AI technique: Routine Design. We have implemented a prototype system in the language of Routine Design (DSPL) that covers part of the domain of protocol design for thin film epoxy-resin composite materials. Results encourage further development. We conclude by describing the overall problem-solving architecture we are developing.

摘要:
In this article, we present a case-based-reasoning approach for the solution of complex manufacturing problems. We describe an application of this methodology to the development of an automated system for weld-process design. We also describe the generic system design and implementation of a Weld-Process Design Advisor (WPDA). The uniqueness of this system is that it combines case-based and heuristic rule-based reasoning methods with analytic models of the problem domain.

摘要:
This article describes the development of a new modeling environment that supports the building of intelligent associates for turning operation planning. By intelligent associates, we mean a computer-based system that allows a process planner to assert a greater degree of control during a consultation than do traditional expert systems. Intelligent associates are able to assist process planners in a colleague-like manner while solving domain tasks. They relieve routine operations while supporting creative problem-solving. Multiple levels of human experience are supported, advising and constraining inexperienced planners while providing a flexible environment for experienced planners working on new planning strategies. Several Al-based techniques have been employed in the development of this new modeling environment. The utility of this environment is demonstrated by developing a turning operation planning intelligent associate (TOPS). TOPS assists a process planner by computing interactions and checking for consistency among the various attributes of a lathe machine-operation planning problem and searching databases for machines, tool holders, and inserts.

摘要:
Traditional experiential knowledge-based diagnostic systems have suffered in their application to real-world problems due to their inability to handle unanticipated situations. Subsequently, diagnostic reasoning approaches have been developed that rely on a model of the device's normal operation to mitigate these shortcomings; these systems are called model-based diagnostic systems. The models of model-based systems are primarily a representation of the actual components of the device, which each have a defined behavior, along with a description of the topology of the device. The behavior of the device is simulated by introducing values into the device's inputs and propagating their effects throughout the interconnected components. Model-based systems often require an excessive amount of computation and data to arrive at a solution, primarily because information about any component in the model can only be utilized to make additional inferences about the components which are physical proximal to it in the device. The main focus of this article is a model of device operation that can be utilized to evaluate efficiently the ability of each component to account for a deviation in the device's state variables. The model presented here encodes the various constituents of the device at multiple levels of detail and abstraction, which are centered around the function or purpose of each concept.
