摘要:
The development of a successful approach to the integration of computer-aided design and computer-aided process-planning will require solutions to several fundamental problems in planning and geometric reasoning. In this article, we consider two such problems, both of which arise from interactions among machinable features. The first problem is that interactions can lead to several alternative interpretations of what the machinable features are. We address this problem by developing an algebra of features. The second problem is that interactions among features can cause problems in optimizing the process plans. For this problem, we have developed a branch-and-bound optimization algorithm with good heuristics to guide the search. This article presents the theory and mathematical framework for both problems and also the details of the implementation and experimental results.

摘要:
This article presents the approach used for building and using the knowledge-based system SUPER to fulfill several types of requirements corresponding to different engineering-domain contexts. SUPER was developed for maintaining and updating information about an evolving system as its slate changes due to abnormal events such as faults or as a consequence of external actions taken on the system. After analyzing different requirements corresponding to engineering-application domains, the successive steps of the approach are given, mainly based on structuring the knowledge base in the shape of a network at the time of knowledge acquisition and maintaining the database consistent at run time.

摘要:
In this article, we first point out the advantages and limitations of the keywords filtering techniques and the standard automatic clustering techniques for group technology applications. We consider, then, a product, or more generally an item, as a conjunction of symbolic attributes. We present a new method to recognize homogeneous families of products and to interpret the families by extraction of their concepts. Finally, the method is applied to analyze a population of 1010 mechanical parts.

摘要:
An important philosophy of quality control due to Taguchi rests on the belief that, once quality is designed into the product and the process, very little inspection is necessary. Taguchi evaluates quality in terms of costs incurred, including inspection and adjustment costs apart from quality loss. Using these costs, he determines an optimal interval for periodic inspection of products. At each inspection, the first item on the process line is checked for defects. If no defects are found, the process is assumed to be under control. On the other hand, if the first item turns out to be defective, the process is immediately stopped and adjusted. The underlying assumption here is that, once a defect is observed, it is construed that the process has drifted and all subsequent items are defective.

摘要:
Autonomous robotic systems designed for hazardous environments require the development of onboard real-time knowledge-based systems capable of generating inference-driven responses to asynchronous, external stimuli. Building such real-time expert systems involves the integration of traditional-knowledge engineering methodologies with time-constrained response and control capabilities. To address such requirements, the Asynchronous Production System (APS), which is a rule-based inference engine capable of dynamic and rapid interaction with its environment, is presented. The APS uses a concurrent-event-driven execution mechanism and an external input-data structure to facilitate the monitoring and processing of real-time asynchronous information. The enhanced conflict-resolution strategies and rule-interruptibility features of the APS execution mechanism allows the APS to make efficient use of the onboard system resources. The implementation of the APS involves the development of a shared-memory, multiprocessor architecture operating in MIMD mode.

摘要:
Computer vision is a complex and multidisciplinary field that is still in its early stages of development. Many of the current applications of computer vision are in the field of inspection because of the relatively low cost of these systems and the need for complete inspection in certain high-volume automated manufacturing or assembly processes. The techniques used to inspect the geometric shape and size of an object appear to be application-specific. This article is concerned with the development of a practical method to measure and inspect parts with an elliptical profile. The method is based on the minimization of the sum of the squares of the central norm errors of a given set of boundary points. The central norm error is defined as the Euclidean distance between a boundary point and the point in the best-fit ellipse along the extension line from the center to the boundary point.

摘要:
Manufacturing automation has progressed through various stages from simple data transfer to the intelligence-intensive systems. The future of CIM relies heavily on intelligence-intensive systems because manufacturing is no longer confined to one local site and manufacturing systems have become complex because of their global nature. In this article, the authors study the future manufacturing environment as a collaborative effort. The essential characteristics-the requirements for integration from a process and communication perspective-are identified as are steps in the process requiring further study. Finally, Intelligent-Computer Integrated Manufacturing (I-CIM) scenarios are presented for specific problems.
