We are pleased to have the opportunity to respond to Herold's critique of our recent paper, “Gender Perception in Arabic and English” (Clarke et al. 1981). The relationship between language and thought continues to attract interest and as Herold's letter illustrates, the complexity of the issues, coupled with the relatively clumsy methodology, permits a variety of interpretations of research results. In the following pages we will briefly review the methodology of “gender assignment” studies and reiterate our contention (Clarke et al. 1981, Clarke et al., forthcoming) that studies of this type address a superficial and unimportant aspect of the Sapir‐Whorf hypothesis of linguistic relativity. (The reader is referred to Whorf [1956] for the most authoritative treatment of linguistic relativity.) We will attempt to show, furthermore, that the very factors under investigation impinge on the development of research methods/instruments and the interpretation of results, a fact which renders all conclusions highl
