摘要:
Summary•An indwelling urethral catheter predisposes patients to local or systemic infection, and to problems related to infection such as encrustation. Although some infections may be unavoidable others, in particular those originating from contaminated drainage bags, may be related to nursing management.•A prospective longitudinal study recorded the errors in practice occurring during the care of 334 patients in a UK district general hospital. Independent observations of bag emptying by nurses were recorded for 66 patients.•Disconnections occurred on 107/972 (11%) occasions, incorrect techniques when emptying the drainage bag were observed on 6–7% of occasions; but incorrect positioning of the bag was rarely recorded.•Significant bacteriuria occurred in 88/334 patients, but cultures from the nurses gloved hands were consistently negative. These results are compared with those obtained during a survey in 1984, and the implications for nursing practice

摘要:
Summary•This paper explores the elusive and complex concept of quality of nursing care. In attempting to define it, the question is raised whether it is possible to preserve the concept of the whole in the drive to isolate and measure component parts.•Components of quality in health care are identified including technical skills, interpersonal relationships and contextual properties of the organizational setting.•Values fundamental to a high‐quality service are highlighted—equity, respect for persons and caring—that enable nurses to negotiate therapeutic relationships with their patients.•A study in the Nursing Research Unit at Kings College London that incorporates multiple triangulation in an attempt to understand the domain of quality of nursing care is described.•Priority is given to patients and nurses as primary definers of quality of nursing care. The process developed in our research to identify indicators of quality as perceived by them is outlined and examples of their views are included. The study is not yet complete; further analysis will enable us to identify conceptual frameworks of quality of nursing care held by pati

Summary•This paper presents a description of all the clients on the caseloads of two CPNs working specifically with elderly people.•It is suggested that such a census can be a valuable part of the audit strategy of a CPN service for elderly people.•Larger‐scale studies of this nature will be needed as a basis for the future planning of CPN services in relation to this clien

摘要:
Summary•The aim of this study is to describe the participation of a group of hospital nurses in the multidisciplinary ward rounds on a cancer‐therapy ward.•Thirteen multidisciplinary group meetings (which took place before the ‘walk round’ meeting with the patients at the bedside) were tape recorded over a period of 4 weeks. The participating nurses were interviewed immediately after each ward round, yielding 23 interviews in total. In addition, three multidisciplinary team meetings were observed by the researcher.•The verbal contributions of the nurses are categorized. The behaviour and the views of the participating nurses about ward rounds are described.•Aspects of decision making and time management are highlighted. Barriers to the participation of nurses in ward rounds are identified.•Recommendations which may improve the participation of nurses in ward

摘要:
Summary•Six women aged over 65, residents in elderly‐care wards who were urinary incontinent were interviewed about how they felt about their incontinence, wearing napkins and receiving help from nurses to change napkins.•Data revealed that urinary incontinence, wearing napkins and being helped by nurses to change napkins is a continuous threat to the patient's intrinsic value and autonomy.•This main theme was expressed in the patients' moving between feelings of shame/guilt and the opposite, feelings of dependency and independency, feelings of insecurity and security, feelings of discomfort and comfort.•The implication of this study was that decreased self‐esteem was closely linked with the way nurses assisted the woman in this kind of situation.•Nurses urgently need to start treating urinary incontinence as a private and personal affair, and to support it with, for example, individually
