Large populations, particularly large human populations, are usually composed of several different subpopulations. We want to utilize this fact to provide a means of improving on the choice of the bandwidth of the kernel density by combining the separate density estimates of the subpopulations. This will provide an improvement on the overall density estimate for the entire population.

Chou, Owen and Borrego A. provided tables of 95% lower confidence limits for the process indices CpCPU (CPL), and Cpk. This represented a major step toward the proper use and understanding of such process indices. However, the simulations in this paper indicate that their tables for Cpkcan produce 97 or 98% lower confidence limits (instead of 95%) making them conservative. An approximation suggested by Bissell is shown to provide the desired 95% lower confidence limits for Cpkfor n > 30.

A sequential procedure for a selection of the better of two trinomial populations has been proposed by Šidók (1988). The present paper shows some Monte Carlo results for 4 different strategies of sequential experimentation in this procedure, on this basis compares the strategies, and gives some practical recommendations for choosing the strategy.

The paper deals with the problem of parameter estimation in the presence of a guess value and attempts to justify the use of Bayes estimators as an alternative to ordinary shrinkage estimators. Finally, certain Bayes estimators of exponential parameters are obtained under type II censoring, and these are compared with the corresponding MLEs and ordinary shrinkage estimators using a Monte Carlo study.

Simulations on parallel computors require distinct streams of pseudo-random deviates for each processor. A combination generator is proposed which achieves distinct streams through a congruential component, and long period through a Fibonacci component. The algorithm has been coded in Fortran 77, and is suitable for fairly long simulations on machines of up to a thousand processors.

An algorithm for generating vectors of counts with extravariation is presented. The algorithm produces a random vector whose distribution is a finite mixture of multinomial random vectors. The proposed distribution matches the first two moments of the Dirichlet-multinomial distribution and coincides with the latter when clusters contain two elements. In a Monte Carlo study, goodness-of-fit tests for data generated under both the Dirichlet-multinomial and the finite mixture distributions are examined.
