摘要:
This paper shows that by minimizing a Chebychev norm a mixing distribution can be constructed which converges weakly to the true mixing distribution with probability one. Deely and Kruse (1968) established a similar result for the supremum norm. For both norms the constructed mixing distribution is computed by solving a linear programming problem, but this problem is considerably smaller when the Chebychev norm is used. Thus a suitable mixing distribution can be constructed from solving a linear programming problem with considerably less computational work than was previously known. To illustrate the application of this simpler procedure it is applied to derive nonparametric empirical Bayes estimates in a simulation study. Some density estimates are also illustrated.

摘要:
Box and Meyer (1986) [1] proposed a Bayesian analysis for saturated orthogonal dedigns, based on the widely-used method of examining normal plots of effects estimates. Stephenson, Hulting, and Moore (1989) [5] give an algorithm for computing this analysis, but it can be quite slow for even 25designs. In this paper we extend the technique to cover all orthogonal factorial designs, rather than just saturated ones, and we show how the computational algorithm can be greatly improved, both in terms of accuracy and speed. With these extensions and improvements the Box-Meyer method becomes viable as a technique for interactive analysis of any orthogonal factorial design, not just small, saturated ones.

摘要:
In estimating the proportion ‘cured’ after adjuvant treatment, a population of cancer patients can be assumed to be a mixture of two Gompertz subpopulations, those who will die of other causes with no evidence of disease relapse and those who will die of their primary cancer. Estimates of the parameters of the component dying of other causes can be obtained from census data, whereas maximum likelihood estimates for the proportion cured and for the parameters of the component of patients dying of cancer can be obtained from follow-up data.
