摘要:
This paper contains an analysis of the problem of computing the joint probability density of the honor card point count in each of four hands in the game of bridge. Efficient representation of the data is considered. Computational algorithms are given for dealing with a compressed form of the density. From the joint density, the densities of the point count in the best and worst hands are obtained. Also obtained is the conditional distribution that a partnership has m points given that one of the partners has n1 points.

摘要:
Class specific stratified posterior probability estimators of misclassification probabilities in discriminant analysis simulations are introduced. These estimators afford a significant variance reduction over the usual count estimators. Sufficient conditions for a variance reduction are given. The stratified posterior probability estimator is generalized to other class specific expectations.

To obtain certain estimators in statistical models, for example, M-estimators, it is often necessary to use an iterative computational technique. One such technique is the iterated weighted least squares method, while another is the well-known Newton1s method. Both methods require a starting value as well as a stopping rule incorporated into their iterative scheme. This paper attempts to indicate the possible effects of using various combinations of starting values and stopping rules on M-estimators, especially when applied to results of Monte Carlo studies. Rosner (1975) obtained, by using the Monte Carlo technique, 5-, 1-, and 0.5-percentage points of the extreme studentized deviate test statistics for detecting at most two outliers in the data of size n = 10(1)20(5)50 from a normally distributed population. In this paper, the 5-percentage points of the test statistics are extended to allow detection of as many as 19 outliers in a data set of up to 100 observations. The critical values obtained by the Monte Carlo technique are smoothed to eliminate possible inconsistencies.

Linear interpolation in k is apparently accurate to .002 over this range (evidently the mean of linear and linear harmonic interpolation in k is accurate to001) and linear harmonic interpolation in V, to .001. Hence this, in effect, completes the tabulation for 100 or fewer samples for most practical purposes

摘要:
In this paper we consider the behavior of the roots of random algebraic polynomials. A code was developed which generates a sample of random algebraic polynomials, calculates the roots of each sample polynomial, and then calculates the averages of the roots. Finally, the roots of the deterministic algebraic polynomial whose coefficients are the averages of the sample coefficients are calculated. These data are then tabulated and graphically displayed. The relationship between the averages of the roots of the sample polynomials and the roots of the average polynomial is discussed.
