In this paper we give the distribution of rank statistics for testing treatment versus control in a randomized block design. The data are given in the form of a two-way layout of n rows and k columns. The rows represent blocks and the columns represent treatments. We assume that treatment 1 is the control or standard. Denote by Xij(i=l,…, n; j=l,…, k) the observation in the ith row and jth column. Let, where rijis the rank of Xijwithin the ith block. Define R*= max {(Rj−R1): j=2,…, k} and define R**= max{∣ Rj−R1∣: j=2, …, k}. Tables are given for the upper tail probabilities for the null distribution of R*and R**for k=2(l)5, n=2(l)8 and for k=6, n=2(l)6.

A form of the distribution function of ratios of linear combinations of order statistics of samples from an exponential distribution is given. From the distribution, tables of percentage points of the statistic for α = .05, .95, and n = 3(1)50, and for censoring up to five observations are presented. Use of the tables is made to find critical values of the most powerful scale and location invariant test of exponentiality against uniformity, and also to find critical values for a test of outliers in an exponential population.

Suppose that we are given k(≥ 2) independent and normally distributed populations π1, …, πkwhere πihas unknown mean μiand unknown variance σ2i(i = 1, …, k). Let μ[i](i = 1, …, k) denote the ithsmallest one of μ1, …, μk. A two-stage procedure is used to construct lower and upper confidence intervals for μ[i]and then use these to obtain a class of two-sided confidence intervals on μ[i]with fixed width. For i = k, the interval given by Chen and Dudewicz (1976) is a special case. Comparison is made between the class of two-sided intervals and a symmetric interval proposed by Chen and Dudewicz (1976) for the largest mean, and it is found that for large values of k at least one of the former intervals requires a smaller total sample size. The tables needed to actually apply the procedure are provided.

The r test procedure for adequacy of the multiple regression model is extended for moderate sample sizes by approximating the moments of the distribution of the test statistic with those of the distribution of the Durbin and Watson (1950) upper-bounding variable. The computation of these moments is simplified by the application of some elementary graph theory. Recommendations con-cerning the selection of near-neighbor pairs are suggested in order to reduce computer storage and execution time.

The conditional probability that Y ≥ L, given that (Y−μ)/sy≥ −k, is evaluated where Y is N(μ, σ2), L is a given constant (a specification limit), andis the usual unbiased estimator of σ2based on a preliminary sample of size n. Tables of k are given for use in raising the proportion of Y’s above L from γ (before screening) to δ (after screening) for δ = 0.90, 0.95, 0.99, and 0.999. These tables correspond to the limiting case as the correlation approaches one for the screening procedure given by Owen and Su (1977). Tables for the case where the correlation is less than one were given by Owen and Haas (1977).

The following approximations to the exact distribution of the Wilcoxon rank sum test (Mann-Whitney U-test) are compared at or near significance levels .05, .025, .01 and .005: the normal approximation with continuity correction, the simple and complete version of the Edgeworth series approximation proposed by Fix and Hodges (1955), Buckle, Kraft and van Eeden’s (1969a) uniform approximation and Iman’s (1976) recently proposed approximation. The comparison takes into account simplicity of application as well as closeness, and some preference rules are suggested for different user objectives.
