摘要:
Percentage points are given for Neyman's smooth goodness-of-fit statistic of order two. Recent work has indicated that this is a good omnibus test statistic for uniformity.

摘要:
Suppose the same nonlinear function involving k parameters is fit to each of t populations. Suppose further it is of interest to compare a specific parameter of the models across the populations. Such comparisons can be expressed as linear hypotheses about the parameters of the nonlinear models. A weighted linear least squares (WLLS) procedure is proposed to test these linear hypotheses. The advantages and disadvantages of the WLLS procedure are discussed. This procedure is also compared to a nonlinear least squares procedure for testing these hypotheses in nonlinear models.

摘要:
Two tests are derived for the hypothesis that the coefficients of variation of k normal populations are equal. The k samples may be of unequal size. The first test is the likelihood ratio test with the usual X2-approximation. A simulation study shows that the small sample behaviour under the null hypothesis is unsatisfactory. An alternative test, based on the sample coefficients of variation, appears to have somewhat better properties.

摘要:
The simple analysis of covariance model is considered where the response variable is modeled in terms of one classification variable (with two groups) and one independent variable or covariate. The usual tests of parallelism and equality of adjusted means for this model are evaluated for a number of different testing procedures. The power of the standard t test procedures, based on the least squares estimates, are compared for small samples by Monte Carlo techniques to the power of proposed t-like and F-like tests procedures based on M estimates. These procedures are compared across a variety of error distributions which include the normal and contaminated normals. The results show that the power of the t-like procedures are highly robust in that they maintain near equal power to the usual t tests under normal errors while resulting in greater power, sometimes substantially greater, than the usual t tests when the errors are from the contaminated normal family. The F-like tests cannot be recommended because their power curves never exceed those for the usual t tests or the t-like tests.

摘要:
We consider a three-period three-treatment crossover experiment to compare the effects of two drugs with a placebo. Subjects within each successive block of six are randomly assigned to the six possible treatment sequences. A full rank linear model is developed for this design. The experiment is carried out and several response variables are measured. Missing data disturb the balance, however, and normality assumptions appear untenable. The significance level of the results is therefore determined by random reassignment of treatment sequences to subjects, in accordance with the randomization actually performed in the experiment.

摘要:
The log-likelihood function (LLF) of the single (location) parameter Cauchy distribution can exhibit up to n relative maxima, where n is the sample size. To compute the maximum likelihood estimate of the location parameter, previously published methods have advocated scanning the LLF over a suf-ficiently large portion of the real line to locate the absolute maximum. This note shows that, given an easily derived upper bound on the second derivative of the negative LLF, Brent's univariate numerical global optimization method can be used to locate the absolute maximum among several relative maxima of the LLF without performing an exhaustive search over the real line.

摘要:
A system of subroutines is presented for efficient computation of joint probabilities from Jensen's bivariate F distribution. Any valid set of parameters is permitted, whereas previous work was limited to the special case of equal numerator degrees of freedom and equal canonical correlations in the underlying multinormal distribution. The use of joint Probabilities from Jensen's bivariate F distribution is demonstrated via an application to two-way ANOVA without interaction.
