摘要:
Several methods have been proposed to estimate the misclassification probabilities when a linear discriminant function is used to classify an observation into one of several populations. We describe the application of bootstrap sampling to the above problem. The proposed method has the advantage of not only furnishing the estimates of misclassification probabilities but also provides an estimate of the standard error of estimate. The method is illustrated by a small simulation experiment. It is then applied to three published, well accessible data sets, which are typical of large, medium and small data sets encountered in practice.

摘要:
This paper is concerned with an empirical investigation of a common and important type of computer system and usage in business applications, viz., querying, updating and modifying a large database. Specifically, it describes the analysis of data collected from such an application and addresses two issues. Firstly, it assesses the applicability of statistical assumptions that underlie certain widely-used queueing theory models for computer systems usage. Secondly, it investigates measures of usage, as well as relationships among them, that may serve as appropriate bases for a pricing scheme for usage of computer systems of the type considered here.

摘要:
Twenty-seven tests of normality or goodness of fit were evaluated for power at detecting a scale contaminated normal sampleo This study used 1,000 replications each of samples of size 12, 17, 25, 33, 50, and 100 from six different contaminated normal distributions. Moment-type tests (e.g., kurtosis) were the most powerful over all sample sizes and contaminations. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov, chi-squared, Anderson-Darling, and Cramer-von-Mises tests had very low power at detecting contaminated normal random variables. Tables of the power of the tests and the power curves of certain tests are given.

摘要:
A new algorithm is stated for the evaluation of the maximum likelihood estimators of the two-parameter gamma density. This, along with other approximations, is used to evaluate by quadrature, moments of the estimators of the shape and scale parameters.

摘要:
The present study investigates the performance of four classification rules with respect to discriminatory ability for data consisting of a mixture of continuous and discrete variables. The four discriminant analysis methods are Fisher's linear discrimination, logistic discrimination, quadratic discrimination and a kernel model. Four measures of performance for evaluation of the classification rules are used: the error rate, the quadratic scoring rule, the modified logarithmic scoring rule and a doubt-based scoring rule. The mixed data are obtained by generating from the fourdimensional normal distribution. Three of these variables were discretized. The results show that Fisher's linear discrimination and logistic discrimination have an alomost similar performance. In most of the situations model seems to be appropriate as far as discriminatory ability is concerned.
