When the salt concentration of the tear layer is reduced, the epithelium of the excised rabbit cornea begins to thicken within a few seconds. When the salt concentration is increased, the epithelium thins. After about six minutes a steady-state is reached. It is shown that the epithelium can increase in thickness 50 per cent if the salt concentration is changed from 1.0% NaCl to 0.65% NaCl. Although this appears remarkable, it is a response which the epithelium shares with other living animal cells.

Using the chloride ion as a reference particle, the stability of the tears was monitored previous to, during and following adaptation to hard contact lenses. The responses observed are discussed in relation to the populations average for this ion before fitting, and to the correspondence of patient symptoms and signs during the adaptation process.

The authors provided two sets of lenses two ten patients with asthenopia and fixation disparity as near. The same frame and distance prescription was used, but one set of lenses had the prism required to reduce fixation disparity to zero as determined with the near Mallett unit, the other had no prism. In accordance with the double blind method, neither the patients nor the dispensing experimenter knew which lenses had prism. All 10 of the patients preferred the lenses with prism.

It sometimes happens that a patient who has difficulty responding adequately to the usual tests may be refracted using a stenopaic slit. Conventional methods refract the two principle meridians of the eye and obtain the final prescription by utilizing the crossed cylinder formula of Thomson. It is shown that this approach fails in the case of bi-oblique astigmatism and that in fact the method providers insufficient data to arrive at a unique prescription in this case.

Preoptometry grades and personality measures were evaluated as predictors of clinical performance in optometry school. Preoptometry grades were somewhat negatively related to clinical performance. Certain personality factors, on the other hand, forecast performance very well; four-variable regression equations developed with the scales of the California Psychological Inventory forecast performance with a mean multiple R of 0.63. In composite, the personality of the highly rated student in optometry clinic is marked by self-confidence, intellectual efficiency, and social responsibility. The findings support the hypothesis that performance in optometry, as in other professions and higher education in general, is fat more related to certain personal qualities than to pre-professional academic achievement. Implications of the findings for optometry school admissions are discussed.
