Brightness contrast function was investigated in amblyopic and non-amblyopic subjects using a baploscopic brightness matching technique. The subjects for the experiment were five amblyopes with central fixation and five control subjects matched for age. The psychophysical method of adjustment was used in brightness matching over a wide range of test and inducing field luminances. All subjects demonstrated brightness contrast functions; however, amblyopic subjects showed abnormal brightness contrast at low and intermediate photopic luminances, but normal contrast function at high luminances. It has been hypothesized that a shift in lateral interactions in the retina, as a result of enlarged retinal receptive fields, contributes to the reduction in visual acuity in amblyopia.

The problem of reversal of the retinal image was investigated in a new way in relation to depth vision and the retinal feedback of binocular eye movements. A visual target which moved in depth was yoked to the average vergence position of the two eyes, as transduced and measured by means of photoelectronic binocular eye-movement recorders and a real-time analog-digital-analog computer system. When the depth target was thus yoked to vergence movements of the two eyes and the eye-movement target position relationship calibrated, dynamic computer programming was used to make the target move compliantly as well as in a reversed way with the convergence and divergence movements of the eyes. In the latter case, convergence motions caused the target to move away from the observer in depth, while divergence movements caused the target to move toward the observer's eyes. Results showed that the reversal of the retinal feedback of vergence movements degrades binocular eye motions to random control of eye motions in fixation at different distances. There was little ability to correct for or adapt to the perturbed feedback control. The effects on vergence eye motion are not as sharp and disturbing as reversal of the retinal feedback of monocular or binocular coordinate lateral movements (pursuit or saccadic movements).

The development of a multidimensional quantitative test battery has made it possible to correlate alcohol intoxication and ataxia, better assess postural equilibrium disequilibrium and do so under unusual conditions and stresses such as occur in aeronautics and space. These same ataxia tests are useful in optometric practice for referral, treatment and research purposes. Part or all of this test battery may be used by optometrists in general, geriatric, pediatric or occupational practice.

Papillary microcirculation is important in the pathogenesis of glaucomatous optic atrophy. The balance between flow and no-flow in the juxtapapillary capillaries and those of the optic nerve head is fine, and is upset by deviations in blood pressure. Intraocular pressures (IOP) of 259 subjects (not under the influence of systemic nor topical medication) were statistically compared with their systemic blood pressures (BP) and an expression relating IOP and BP derived.

OCAT scores and preoptometry grades were evaluated as predictors of grades in first and second year optometry. OCAT Biology, Chemistry and Physics achievement tests and the Verbal Ability test correlated significantly with optometry grades. However, no single OCAT subtest exceeded the forecast made by preoptometry grades in math and science courses. Although preoptometry math-science GPA was the best single predictor of grades in our school, the addition of OCAT measures to this predictor enhanced the forecast. The most efficient combination was preoptometry GPA in math-science plus OCAT Biology which yielded multiple correlation coefficients of 0.65 and 0.60 with first and second year grades respectively. The usefulness of the OCAT in a specific setting is discussed.

In February of 1972, the Veterans Administration Department of Education and Research approved funding for a program to train optometry and optometric technician students in the Veterans Administration Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. This paper describes the background, present stage of development, and results of the program to date and discusses the implications for the future of optometric education and services in Veterans Administration facilities.

Visual identification is an important element in the study of ocular pathology. However, optometry students often do not have sufficient access to study materials which allow them to rapidly acquire the knowledge necessary to correctly identify ocular pathologies. The Instructional Media Center at The Ohio State University College of Optometry is attempting to alleviate this problem and add to the efficiency of current instructional techniques in ocular pathology by providing students with specially designed self-study units on color microfiche.
