SUMMARYIncubation of unfixed slices of skin for 1 hat 37° C in Hanks' medium allowed the expression of proteolytic activity in the upper keratinocyte layers in psoriatic lesions and, in some cases, in uninvolved skin of psoriatics, but never in normal skin. SUMMARYWe studied the respiratory burst activity of peripheral blood monocytes and polymorphonu clear leukocytes (PMN) in eleven patients with psoriasis and eleven healthy controls, using zymosan particles to activate the phagocytesin vitro.The activation of the phagocytes was measured in a luminol‐enhanced chemiluminescence (CL) assay. We found a significantly higher respiratory burst activity of both monocytes and PMN in patients with psoriasis compared with the control subjects. The percentages of monocytes in psoriatics did not differ from those of the controls. The higher amount of zymosan‐induced CL activity generated in the patient group was unrelated to the age of the individual. SUMMARYThe inhibitory effect of PUVA on delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity to 2,4‐dinitrochloroben‐zene (DNCB) has been analysed by sensitizing and challenging patients with psoriasis on shielded and treated areas of skin, and comparing the results with those for untreated patients. SUMMARYThe gross appearances of human scalp hair have been analysed according to the optical properties of individual hair fibres, the spectrophotometric features of hair in the mass, and the resolution of hair colour into its shade, dilution and luminance. SUMMARYThe effect of blood lymphocytes on syngeneic oral epithelial cells was studied in twelve patients with Behçet's disease (BD) and twenty‐one patients with recurrent aphthous ulcers (RAU). The control group consisted of twenty‐five patients with non‐aphthous skin disease and eight healthy individuals.Primary cell lines obtained from oral mucosa by suction blistering and subsequent enzymatic dissociation were used as target cells. SUMMARYIndirect immunofluorescence was used to compare the reactivity of thirteen different squamous epithelia for the titration of serum antibody in five patients with active pemphigus vulgaris. SUMMARYThe comedolytic activity of topical medicaments may be quantitatively assessed by inducing microcomedones on the backs of black males by a 2‐week occlusive exposure to 10% crude coal tar. SUMMARYTestosterone and several of its metabolites were tested in the female hamster flank organ. Microscopical examination was carried out and some histological features were quantified. Testosterone, 5α‐dihydrotestosterone and 3α‐androstanediol were very effective in stimulating the growth of the sebaceous structure, whereas 3β‐androstanediol showed no effect at all. SUMMARYLinear facial hair growth and the density of facial hair were measured by a photographic method and their relationship to plasma testosterone (T) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) concentra tions was examined in twelve healthy men. In addition, we investigated eight men with coeliac disease in whom we had previously demonstrated reversible androgen resistance. The divergence of plasma T (increased) and DHT (decreased) concentrations in this condition enabled examination of possible independent actions of these androgens on facial hair growth.Linear facial hair growth was significantly reduced in coeliac patients compared with controls and correlated with plasma DHT but not with plasma T concentration. Conversely, hair density was significantly greater in coeliacs than controls and correlated only with plasma T concentration. These abnormalities of facial hair growth and hair density appeared more marked in treated patients receiving a gluten‐free diet.These findings suggest that T and DHT may have independent roles in the control of male facial hair growth, i.e. T for hair follicle priming and DHT for promotion of linear growth. SUMMARYThe cell proliferation kinetics of the genodermatoses, erythrokeratoderma variabilis (EKV) and symmetrical progressive erytbrokeratoderma (SPE), were studied using flash labelling studies and cell production rates using vincristine.In EKV the results indicated a mildly hyperproliferative state, while in SPE the results, although variable, showed a prominent epidermal hyperproliferation.
