Summary—Forty‐three patients being treated with dapsone for dermatitis herpetiformis were studied to determine the prevalence and mechanisms of anaemia in this condition. Anaemia was more common than in a comparable normal control group although it was usually mild. Most patients had evidence of drug‐induced haemolysis which was dose related and this was the most important cause for anaemia. Malabsorption did not seem to be a significant factor in the development of anaemia. The incidence of iron deficiency was no greater than in the controls, despite urinary iron loss. Five patients had low levels of serum B12, of whom 3 had pernicious anaemia. Summary—We describe 8 cases of trichotillomania in women in which the scalp exhibits a cropped appearance over the crown, extending to the frontal margin in some cases, but sparing the nape of the neck and lateral margins. The condition has persisted with no improvement for periods up to 17 years in one case.The hair on the affected area is mostly less than 3 cm. long and of normal texture. Many of the short hairs have a tapered hypopigmented tip and when groups of hairs are plucked only anagen roots are found. There is no microscopical abnormality of the hair shaft and no exclamation mark hairs have been extracted. The only explanation for the persistence of newly growing short anagen hairs is the continual plucking of all those exceeding 3 cm. length.All the patients but one repeatedly denied interfering with their hair, even after the significance of the changes in hair growth had been explained to them. In all the cases except one, psychiatric assessment showed a provocative social situation and personality traits likely to result in a disorder such as trichotillomania.The disorder has many features in common with idiopathic trichoclasia as described by Sabouraud and other French writers. Summary—An investigation of the incidence of erythrasma amongst patients in a psychiatric hospital for the mentally subnormal is described. The axillae, groins and toewebs were examined and clinical erythrasma, showing characteristic coral‐red fluorescence under Wood's light, was found in 43% of the 874 patients examined. The incidence in the groins was 18%, in the axillae 4% and in the toewebs 30%. Fluorescence of other skin sites was also seen in a small proportion of the patients. Diphtheroids fluorescing on tissue culture medium No. 199 could be cultured from 35% of the fluorescent skin areas and from 25% of non‐fluorescing sites. The incidence of erythrasma increased with age but was unaffected by state of personal hygiene, although fewer of the patients with a reasonable level of cleanliness carried fluorescent diphtheroids on non‐fluorescen

Summary—Twenty specimens of normal skin, taken from 8 different areas and 61 specimens from patients suffering from psoriasis, scleroderma (sclerodactyly), angiomas, basal‐cell and squamous‐cell carcinomas were studied histochemically for 13 enzyme activities.Alkaline phosphatase (AP) and adenosine triphosphatases are mainly useful in revealing the vascular pattern of the dermis, ATP'ases showing activity in larger vessels than AP. On the other hand, some metabolic changes in the vascular wall may be indicated by variations in AP and ATP'ase activities.The various other enzyme activities deserve studying for their metabolic significance. Summary—A study by conventional electron microscopy of the black lesions in the dermatosis of kwashiorkor revealed no structural changes that could be associated with the colour change.
