SUMMARY.—Some of the factors contributing to severe intravascular stasis in the blood vessels supplying the epidermis are discussed. Changes in blood viscosity result from a variety of factors which act maximally at the peak and in the venous arm of the papillary vessel. SUMMARY.—Autoerythrocyte sensitization syndrome (painful bruising syndrome) is a chronic purpuric cutaneous disease of women, characterized by localized painful inflammatory swellings which in a few hr. develop into painful ecchymoses. Some patients also have systemic manifestations: psychiatric and neurological symptoms, abdominal pain, and genito‐urinary and gastrointestinal bleeding, in that order of prevalence.Histological examination shows an intense vasculitis. Ecchymoses can occur spontaneously, particularly with emotional stress and after mild trauma. The haematological and blood clotting pictures are normal. Intradermal injection of erythrocytes or red cell stroma reproduces the spontaneous lesion.Two patients with this syndrome are presented. SUMMARY.—The records of 554 consecutive patients attending hospitals in the Cambridge region with urticaria have been analysed with the aid of a computer. These patients represent only a small minority of all patients with urticaria in the region. In 79%, the aetiology was unknown although in many cases aggravating factors, for example, psychological stress, aspirin, or infection, were detected.A past or family history of atopic disorders was not found more frequently in patients with urticaria than in controls and the course of the disease in patients with a background of atopy did not differ from the remainder, suggesting that an undetected allergy is not responsible for many of these undiagnosed cases. Allergy is relatively more important in acute urticaria and in patients who do not attend hospital.The frequency of attacks and total duration of the disease are different in patients with urticaria alone, angio‐oedema alone and both together but there was little difference in the aetiological factors, supporting the concept that urticaria and angio‐oedema are fundamentally similar.The prognosis is expressed in the form of life t

SUMMARY.—The thickness of ear epidermis in normal albino guinea‐pigs is 60% higher than that of back epidermis. The proliferative activity measured by DNA‐synthesizing cells is equal in both body regions. Cytokinetic analysis of the upward movement of3H‐Thymidine‐labelled cells revealed a transit time of about 8 days on the back and about 14 days on the ear. SUMMARY.—Only 2 methods for the incorporation of radioactive tracers into skin i.e. the localin vivomethod and thein vitromethod can be seriously considered for routine clinical use in man. Both methods‐and especially thein vitromethod as modified by us—are described in detail.The patterns of epidermal labelling and the labelling indices seen in the same skin fields, from the same 6 healthy human male volunteers, with thein vivoandin vitrotechniques are directly compared. These two methods were found to yield very similar results.Thus, the average percentage of labelled basal cell nuclei was found to be 2·2% (range 1·9%, to 2·6%) with the localin vivomethod and 2·3% (range 2·0% to 2·6%) with thein vitromethod. The average percentage of labelled epidermal cell nuclei was found to be 2·1% (1·7% to 2·5%) with thein vivomethod and 2·2% (range 1·4% to 3·0%) with thein vitromethod for the same skin field.It is concluded that the local in vivo labelling method will probably provide invaluable data on cell and metabolite turnover rates, and its use should perhaps be limited to such studies. For all other purposes, however, thein vitromethod, here detailed, seems to be preferable for routine clinical studies because of its safety, simplicity an
