SUMMARYA group of 281 patients with chronic urticaria was classified into various subtypes and compared with 357 healthy controls for PI types of α1‐antitrypsin. Total α1‐antitrypsin was measured by the Mancini technique, and PI types were determined by isoelectric focusing. The MZ phenotype and the Z gene frequency were significantly more frequent in the urticaria group. The Z gene predominated in the groups with cold urticaria and acquired angio‐oedema. The total group of chronic urticaria patients showed a significant decrease in total α1‐antitrypsin compared with the control group (P<0.03). Deficiencies in α1‐antitrypsin may predispose to the development of certain types of urticaria and

SUMMARYWe report an investigation of peripheral blood polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) from untreated patients with mild, quiescent psoriasis. Four aspects of the ‘metabolic burst’ were measured to illustrate phagocytosis‐related events. These were: myeloperoxidase activity, hydrogen peroxide release, superoxide production and luminol‐amplified chemiluminescence. SUMMARYConsecutive sections through the epidermis were cut parallel to its surface, and the polyamine (PA) concentration in each section was measured by liquid chromatography. There was a constant decrease in PA concentration (expressed as nmol/mg DNA) from the deepest layer to the more superficial layers. Putrescine showed the greatest increase (+83%) (P<0.02): The elevations of spermidine and spermine levels were less marked, respectively +30% (P<0.05) and + 27% (NS). Proliferating cells in the basal layer possess high polyamine levels and as they mature in the superficial layers their polyamine content decreases.

SUMMARYUsing an indirect immunoperoxidase technique, both epithelial membrane antigen and carcinoembryonic antigen were identified within the ducts and secretory coils of the eccrine sweat gland. Antibodies to epithelial membrane antigen stained the intercellular canaliculi of the secretory coils, as did those antisera to CEA which showed activity against normal cross‐reacting antigen (CEX, NCA). SUMMARYFoot infection has been studied in 514 coal miners: 70% of men had some evidence of infection but dermatophyte fungi accounted for only one‐third of those affected; Gram‐negative bacilli accounted for much of the remaining pathology. Itching and cracking were more severe in those with dermatophytes than in those with Gram‐negative bacilli. SUMMARYThirty‐two subjects who suffered from dandruff participated in a study in which one‐half of the head was washed with a shampoo containing 1% zinc pyrithione (ZPT) and the other half was washed with the same shampoo without ZPT. Four groups, eight subjects per group, were shampooed one, three, six or nine times (shampoo frequency twice per week). Clinical dandruff gradings of each half of the head were made 4 days after the last shampoo in each group, when scalp biopsy samples were also taken from each half of the head. Measurements of labelling index (LI), mean epidermal thickness (MET), and assessment of the numbers of PAS‐ and Gram‐positive micro‐organisms were made on the biopsy samples. There was a progressive reduction in dandruff on the sides of the head treated with the ZPT shampoo, the differences relative to the placebo‐treated areas being statistically significant after three, six and nine washes. There were no significant differences in L1 between treatment groups and the MET was shown to vary according to the treatment and the number of washes. SUMMARYThree infants with X‐linked ichthyosis have been observed following pregnancies in which placental sulphatase deficiency (PSD) was suggested prenatally by low oestrogen excretion and an abnormal urinary steroid excretion pattern. This was confirmed in two cases by the absence of placental enzyme activity. In one case labour was spontaneous but all deliveries required Caesarean section. At 8 months the first infant showed an eczema in an atopic distribution but when seen at 5 years had typical X‐linked ichthyosis. The skin of the second child peeled extensively at the age of 2 days but was not troublesome for 2 years, when ichthyosis vulgaris was diagnosed on clinical grounds. This pattern has persisted for 3 years. The third infant showed a mildly scaly skin in the neonatal period but at 3 months the features and distribution of X‐linked ichthyosis were apparent. SUMMARYTwenty‐one patients with ichthyosis were classified as either ichthyosis vulgaris (IV) (five cases) or recessive X‐linked ichthyosis (RXLI) (sixteen cases) by using a steroid sulphatase assay of plantar callus and peripheral leukocytes. SUMMARYDermal hypoplasia is reported in three patients with neurofibromatosis. The areas of dermal hypoplasia failed to react to vasodilator stimuli and responded poorly to a vasoconstrictor stimulus. Histology of these lesions showed neurofibromatous tissue and at an ultrastructural level cells resembling perineurial cells were wrapped around dermal vessels. The poor vascular responses seen in these areas of neurofibromatous dermal hypoplasia might be due to the perineurial cells acting as a barrier to diffusion of the pharmacological agents and as a physical perivascular splint

SUMMARYThirteen adults with dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) controlled by dapsone or sulphamethoxypyridazine were given indomethacin or placebo in a double‐blind cross‐over study.
