SUMMARYRepigmentation induced by oral photochemotherapy (8‐MOP+UV‐A) in four patients with vitiligo has been studied by histochemical and ultrastructural techniques. Hypertrophic melanocytes were demonstrated both in the middle and deep portions of the hair follicles in the centre of islands of repigmentation and also in the epidermis of the expanding repigmenting border. Mitosis of melanocytes was absent in these areas. Ultrastructural study showed that the melanocytes of repigmented areas were hyperactive. The melanosomes were larger than those of surrounding healthy skin, although the mode of packaging was unaltered. These observations suggest that melanocytes repigmenting vitiliginous skin under the influence of oral photochemotherapy are derived from a melanocytic reservoir localized in the hair follic

SUMMARYRespiration and sulphate uptake have been measured in guinea‐pig skin subjected to heat damage and maintained on a medium containing sodium succinate. Succinate was found to have a protective effect against loss of oxygen uptake, a higher temperature being required for 50% effect than that reported with glucose as substrate. SUMMARYLeukocytes from patients with granuloma annulare were studiedin vitroin order to detect functional abnormalities. Random migration and chemotaxis of both polymorphonuclear leukocytes and monocytes were similar in patients and controls. Preincubation of normal cells with patients' plasma did not enhance or inhibit locomotion. Phagocytosis and oxidative burst as reflected by chemiluminescence were also normal. Peripheral blood lymphocytes incorporated uridine normally with and without stimulation by the non‐specific mitogen phytohacmagglutinin. These studies suggest that peripheral blood leukocyte function in patients with granuloma annulare is normal, but do not exclude a functional abnormality in tissu

SUMMARYWe have simultancoulsy measured epidermal DNA synthesis, epidermal thickness and cyclic nucleotide levels in essential fatty acid (EFA) deficient hairless mice skin.In vitroepidermal DNA synthesis and epidermal thickness were significantly increased in EFA deficient epidermis. Cyclic AMP levels were significantly reduced when expressed using three different data bases. Cyclic GMP levels were increased using two data bases but these increases were not statistically significant.Cyclic AMP cyclic GMP ratios were signiticantly decreased in the EFA deficient skin.The results provide evidence that cyclic nucleotide levels are altered in an animal model of benign epidermal proliferation.

SUMMARYThe distribution of immunoglobulins and C3component of complement (C3) in the skin of twenty‐four patients with dermatitis herpetiformis was studied. Skin biopsies were taken from three sites, the extensor surface of the elbow, the flexor surface of the forearm and from the thigh.Twenty‐two (90%) patients showed variation in deposits of immunoglobulins and C3at the three sites. IgA was present in all patients, but differed in quantities deposited at the three sites in nineteen (80%) patients. Similar variation between sites was observed with IgG, IgM and C3. There was variation within three biopsies, IgA being absent from some sections and present in others. Three patients had a continuous pattern of IgA deposition. One had both continuous and papillary deposits within a single section.There was no difference in the incidence or quantity of immunoglobulin and C3between the elbow, forearm and thigh.There was observed to be a diminution in quantity of IgA and incidence of C3in patients taking a gluten‐free diet.Deposition of IgA, IgM, IgG and C3is not uniform throughout the skin and conclusions drawn from the quantity of immunoglobulin and C3in a single biopsy may not be rel

SUMMARYFourteen cases of Hutchinson's lentigo maligna and eight further cases with nodular invasive areas in whom liquid nitrogen spray has been curative are reported. We suggest that in view of its simplicity and efficacy, cryotherapy is the treatment of choice for the macular phase and possibly also for the nodular invasive stage.
