SUMMARYWe compared the clinical features, histopathology, immunopathology and immunogenetics of 30 patients with toxic erythema of pregnancy and 24 patients with herpes gestationis. Although we found some clinical and histopathological overlap we highlighted several important differences. In toxic erythema of pregnancy prominent striae were frequently present. Herpes gestationis was suggested by the occurrence of periumbilical lesions, acute exacerbations immediately after delivery, and persistence of the eruption for more than 3 weeks post‐partum. In herpes gestationis, immunofluorescence studies were consistently positive, there was a high frequency of HLA‐B8 and an association with autoimmune thyrotoxicosis. Toxic erythema of pregnancy did not share these immunological features. Therefore we feel that toxic erythema of pregnancy and herpes gestationis should continue to be classified as separate disord

SUMMARYSeven patients who developed a characteristic pruritic rash in late pregnancy are described. Clinically the lesions consisted of erythematous urticarial papules and plaques, with vesicles in some cases. The eruption started in the striae on the abdomen and spread over the thighs and in most cases also over the arms and buttocks. Biopsy showed lymphocytic vasculitis with a varying admixture of eosinophils and only minor epidermal changes. Immunofluorescence examination of six cases showed C3 deposition along the dermoepidermal junction in only one case. The lymphocytes, identified by a specific anti‐T‐cell serum, appeared to be mostly T‐cells.The nomenclature of pruritic skin disease in late pregnancy is confusing, but the term ‘late prurigo of pregnancy’ seems appropriate for this

SUMMARYSerum testosterone, sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and prolactin were measured in thirty‐eight women with acne which persisted or started after the age of 18 years. One or more of these levels were abnormal in 76% of patients. Increased testosterone or low SHBG were present alone or in combination in 60% of patients. This group was presumed to have a raised level of non‐protein bound, metabolically‐available testosterone. Hyperprolactinaemia, which was present in 45% of patients, may be important in view of the reported association with increased adrenal androgens. SUMMARYThe activities of five lysosomal hydrolases were determined fluorometrically in the serum of patients with systemic sclerosis (PSS), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), dermatomyositis (DM), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), or Raynaud's disease (RD). In PSS the β‐galactosidase activity was significantly increased compared with controls and the other connective tissue diseases. The β‐N‐acetyl‐glucosaminidase was significantly increased in PSS, SLE and DM. In PSS both enzymes were more active in the early stage of the disease than later. These changes of enzyme pattern seem to be a relatively reliable marker for the differential diagnosis of PSS compared to other connective tissue diseases, especially for RD, in which the β‐galactosidase activity was significantly decreased. SUMMARYWe have reviewed the clinical and microbiological features of 113 cases of idiopathic onycholysis primarily affecting the great toenails. It is suggested that the majority of these cases were traumatic in origin. Although dermatophytes and potentially pathogenic bacteria were frequently found in the lesions, they were thought to be commensal in most cases. This is of considerable significance with regard to the selection of appropriate therapy.

SUMMARYA stereological electron microscopical technique was applied to biopsies of oral ulcers from patients with Behçet's syndrome in order to carry out a quantitative analysis of the cellular infiltrate. The results have confirmed the light microscopical qualitative findings of a large number of lymphocytes (67%) but have established that a relatively large proportion of the leukocytes (14%) belong to the monocytc‐macrophage series. The virtual absence of plasma cells during the early stages of ulceration and the presence of a large number of lymphocytes and monocytes argue in favour of a type IV cell‐mediated immune reaction. SUMMARYThe epidermis of the rabbit ear was stripped and the effects on percutaneous absorption and32P incorporation into lipid, TCA‐sotuble, RNA and DNA fractions in the epidermis were studied for 21 days. Skin penetration by14C‐propylene glycol increased 300‐fold immediately after stripping twenty times. Three to five days after stripping, penetration had returned almost to normal levels, but it required several additional days for the barrier function to become normal. The process of regeneration of the skin barrier paralleled the morphological changes in the epidermis but was inconsistent with the biochemical data. A significant increase in32P incorporation was observed at 10 days, when the hyperplasia had disappeared and percutaneous absorption had returned to normal. SUMMARYThe localization of hyaluronectin has been studied in normal skin and in basal cell carcinoma. In fetal skin it is abundant in the dermis but absent from the epidermis, and in adult skin it is totally absent except in the hair sheaths and bulbs. In basal cell carcinoma it is abundant only in the stroma reaction. The presence of this protein in mesenchymatous tissues seems to be linked to zones of physiological or neoplastic proliferation.

SUMMARYWe have studied the inflammatory response produced by painting pigs and hairless mice with anthracene and subsequently exposing the skin to fluorescent blacklight lamps. Erythema and oedema appeared in pig skin shortly after the onset of irradiation; oedema but no erythema was evident in mouse skin. The response in both animals became increasingly severe as long as irradiation continued, and began to resolve when irradiation ceased. Hyperaemia (increased tissue blood content) was quantified by the increase in51Cr‐RBC content (c.p.m./wet weight) of the skin. Erythema (appearance of redness) was assessed by the use of an ‘erythema grading scale’ consisting of red gelatin filters of increasing red saturation sandwiched between clear acrylic sheets. Mouse skin responded with a nine‐fold hyperaemia compared with unirradiated skin, although no erythema was produced. In contrast, pig skin responded with intense erythema with no corresponding increase in hypaercmia.
