摘要:
AbstractThis study investigatedthe consequences of increased levels of expressed message intensity on receivers' subsequent evaluations of the source and topic of the message, in addition to their perceptions of the message itself. A basic message was prepared in which a previously neutral source attacked a relatively low‐salience topic. The intensity with which the source stated his attitudinal position was systematically varied by the alternative insertion of verbs and modifiers of known intensive value. This created two experimental messages, one of low intensity, the other of high intensity. Subjects read one of the messages and responded via rating scales.Obtained results provided partial support for the experimental hypotheses, in that the high intensity message was judged as clearer and its source as more dynamic than the low intensity message. A secondary analysis based solely on perceived message intensity conformed even more closely to the experimental predictions. Messages rated as being highly intense were also rated as clearer and more logical, and having sources who were judged to be more trustworthy, more qualified and more dynami

摘要:
AbstractThis paper illustratesthe pervasive lack of critical feedback among people at large. A number of untoward intraorganizational consequences of this lack are drawn from the work of Chris Argyris, then a glance is given to the relevance of sensitivity training and some of its shortcomings. To help fulfill this need for forthright feedback among fellow workers, the author proposes the interchange of written interpersonal messages. For the sender, motivation comes from (1) the hope of honest feedback from others in their turn, and (2) “courage” from some assurance of anonymity, based on a coordinator using code identifications for senders and interchange groups of at least five persons.Examples are given of how the messages might be structured; preliminary field testing of the process is recounted; voluntariness of all participants is stressed; various coordinator roles are explored; and presumed benefits of written interchanges are compared with probable co

摘要:
AbstractAffective, Cognitive, and Behavioraldimensions have been hypothesized to be separate manifestations of a common mediating process that makes up the total attitude structure. This hypothesis was tested for attitudes about communication, showing that the affective dimension is strongly related to the behavioral but that the tests that are usually used as measures of these dimensions may not be as sensitive as they should be.

摘要:
AbstractIn this studyinterviews were used to discover the effect of four variables on police image: race, sex, age, and type of communication with policemen. It was found that white subjects, subjects who reported that their images of police were based on personal contact, and subjects who reported no arrest record had significantly more favorable images of police than did their counterparts.

摘要:
AbstractMore than 300local news stories from two West Coast dailies were reviewed for accuracy by the persons who had been reported on. Accuracy rates in this study generally replicate those found previously. The closer the acquaintanceship between the newsmaker and anyone on the news staff, the less likely an error will be perceived by the newsmaker. Close acquaintanceship also appears to ameliorate the impact of errors on the newsmaker. So‐called subjective and objective errors do not appear to be distinguishable by their seriousnes

摘要:
AbstractEngineering students, even some who have previously lost interest in English, become enthusiastic learners when they are shown that the ability to communicate precisely is a necessary part of engineering. Accepting this thesis, the Engineering School at Arizona State University in 1955 incorporated an engineering communications course into the core of all degree programs. In the fourteen years the course has been offered, it has been successfully completed by about two thousand students, with an average failure of about three percent. This high percentage of completion is attributed to three things: the communication skills developed are related to the work of engineers; the teaching method is analytical; and the student's work is carefully evaluated by the instructor and revised by the student when not acceptable. The instructor is, of course, another prime factor; a few have been unable to teach the course effectively. In addition to other capabilities, the instructor of this course must be willing to accept the fact that he is teaching the course to make a better engineer‐not a journalist, orator, or technical writer. The instructor must also have a firm grasp of English grammar and a certain amount of technology, preferably including prior industrial experience related to the work of engineer
